Brown Outlasts Penn in Double-Overtime Ivy League Thriller
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — In a marathon Ivy League women’s basketball clash that required two extra periods to decide, Grace Arnolie scored 24 points to lead Brown to a 77-65 victory over Penn on Saturday at Pizzitola Sports Center.
The game, witnessed by 294 fans, saw the Bears improve to 10-4 overall, while the Quakers fell to 10-5. Both teams entered the contest with identical 9-4 records, adding early significance to the conference showdown.
Brown appeared poised to secure a regulation win, holding a 50-48 lead with under 10 seconds to play in the fourth quarter. Penn’s Mataya Gayle, who finished with 18 points, drove for a crucial layup with 22 seconds remaining to tie the game at 50. Brown’s ensuing possession ended in a turnover by Arnolie, giving Penn a final chance. The Quakers’ Katie Collins missed a jumper as time expired, sending the game to overtime tied.
The first overtime was a tense, back-and-forth affair. Brown built a 59-55 lead after an Alyssa Moreland layup with just over two minutes left. Penn responded with a 3-pointer from Gayle and two free throws from Brooke Suttle to take a 60-59 lead—their first since the second quarter. Arnolie then found Moreland for another layup to put Brown back up 61-60. Gayle was fouled on Penn’s next possession and calmly sank both free throws with 52 seconds left, giving Penn a 62-61 advantage. On the final play of the period, Penn’s Simone Sawyer had a potential game-winning 3-pointer blocked by Olivia Young, forcing a second overtime.
The second overtime belonged entirely to Brown. The Bears opened the period on a decisive 13-0 run, overwhelming a fatigued Penn squad. The surge was fueled by stifling defense—the Bears blocked 10 shots in the game—and efficient offense. Olivia Young, who scored 12 points, hit a key 3-pointer, and Ada Anamekwe, who added 13 points, contributed a layup during the run. Elizabeth Nelson capped the burst with a 3-pointer to give Brown a 74-62 lead with 1:40 to play. Penn, which managed only four points in the final period and shot just 22 of 71 from the field for the game, could not recover.
The most important part of the game was Brown’s dominant and immediate takeover in the second overtime. After two periods of near-even play, the Bears seized control from the opening tip, executing on both ends to deliver the knockout blow. Their 16-4 scoring margin in the final five minutes was a testament to their depth and defensive resilience, particularly their interior presence which generated 17 offensive rebounds and 36 points in the paint.
Penn was led by Gayle’s 18 points and four assists, while Saniah Caldwell added 16 points. Brown’s Arnolie added four assists to her game-high 24 points in 46 minutes of action. Moreland finished with 12 points and four blocks for the Bears.
Statistically, Brown scored 77 points on 84 possessions for an offensive rating of 92.2, while Penn’s 65 points on the same number of possessions yielded a rating of 77.7. The Quakers shot 31 percent from the field compared to Brown’s 36.8 percent.
Penn next hosts Harvard on Jan. 17. Brown travels to face Cornell on the same date.
