George Mason Defeats La Salle in Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball
FAIRFAX, Va. (Interstat) — The George Mason Patriots used a methodical defensive effort and a standout performance from guard Kennedy Harris to pull away from the La Salle Explorers for a 62-47 victory in an Atlantic 10 Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at EagleBank Arena.
In a contest defined by offensive struggles, George Mason steadily built its lead each quarter, holding La Salle to just 33 points through the first three periods before closing out the win in front of 784 fans. The Patriots improved to 9-6 overall, while the Explorers fell to 10-5.
The most important part of the game was George Mason’s consistent defensive pressure and control of the tempo, which never allowed La Salle to establish any sustained offensive rhythm or mount a serious comeback attempt. From the opening tip, the Patriots set a physical tone, contesting shots and forcing the Explorers into difficult attempts. La Salle’s leading scorer, Aryss Macktoon, was hounded throughout her 36 minutes, and while she finished with a team-high 17 points, her efficiency was hampered by the constant defensive attention. The Patriots’ ability to string together stops and answer every modest La Salle push with a score of their own ensured the Explorers never truly threatened in the second half.
Harris, a 5-foot-6 guard from Hampton, Virginia, was the catalyst for George Mason, leading all scorers with 18 points and adding five assists in 35 minutes. She orchestrated the Patriots’ offense, hitting key shots to stifle any momentum La Salle tried to generate. Her backcourt mate, Mary Amoateng of Baltimore, contributed nine points and four assists, providing steady ball-handling against La Salle’s defensive sets.
The Patriots received balanced scoring support beyond their guards. Zahirah Walton and Page Greenburg each chipped in 10 points, while Louis Volker added nine points, two blocks, and was a disruptive presence defensively. Maliyah Johnson, a 6-foot-3 forward from Chicago, anchored the interior with six points and a game-high defensive effort.
For La Salle, Macktoon’s 17 points led the way, but she was the only Explorer to reach double figures. Ashleigh Connor from Pittsburgh scored 10 points, and Joan Quinn of Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, added eight points and three assists. The Explorers, who entered the game having won four of their last five, including a conference win over George Washington, could not solve George Mason’s defensive schemes and shot poorly from the field all night.
The game’s trajectory was established early. After a low-scoring first quarter that ended with George Mason leading 14-12, the Patriots began to create separation in the second period. A 7-0 run midway through the quarter, capped by a three-pointer from Harris, extended the lead to nine points. La Salle managed only 11 points in the quarter, and George Mason took a 29-23 advantage into halftime.
Any hope of an Explorer rally was extinguished in the third quarter. La Salle’s offensive woes continued as they managed just 10 points on a series of missed jumpers and turnovers. Meanwhile, George Mason maintained its efficient, if not explosive, offensive output, adding 15 points to stretch the lead to 44-33 heading into the final period. The Patriots then put the game away with an 18-point fourth quarter, their highest-scoring period of the night, to secure the 15-point victory.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, George Mason was projected with a 95.70 percent probability to win. The Patriots lived up to that expectation by leveraging their defensive identity and a more diversified scoring attack to hand La Salle its second loss in three games.
La Salle looks to rebound on the road against Saint Joseph’s this Saturday. George Mason continues its conference schedule with a short trip to face rival George Washington on Sunday.
