Georgia Women Roll Past Charleston Southern to Stay Undefeated

ATHENS, Ga. (Interstat) — The Georgia Bulldogs, one of the nation’s remaining unbeaten teams, showcased their depth and overwhelming efficiency in a commanding 97-52 victory over the Charleston Southern Buccaneers in a nonconference women’s basketball game Monday afternoon at Stegeman Coliseum.

The game was effectively decided in a dominant first quarter, which set the tone for the evening. Georgia, now 14-0, opened the contest on a 14-3 run, fueled by early three-pointers from Dani Carnegie and Trinity Turner. Charleston Southern, which fell to 2-11, briefly found a rhythm with a 9-0 spurt to close within 14-12, but the Bulldogs responded with a 10-0 run to end the period, taking a 24-15 lead they would only expand.

The most important part of the game was Georgia’s immediate and sustained defensive pressure, which created a pace and scoring volume Charleston Southern could not match. The Bulldogs forced 11 Buccaneer turnovers, converting them into easy transition opportunities, and relentlessly controlled the glass with 14 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second-chance points. This defensive foundation fueled an offensive clinic, as Georgia shot 56.9% from the field and 52.2% from three-point range.

Zhen Craft, a 6-foot-2 forward from Waldorf, Maryland, was the top star for Georgia, posting a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds in just 19 minutes off the bench. Her activity inside epitomized Georgia’s physical advantage, as she collected five offensive rebounds and shot 7 of 10 from the floor.

She was far from alone. Carnegie, a guard from Mount Vernon, New York, led all scorers with 16 points, all in the first half, including four three-pointers. Turner, from Orlando, Florida, filled the stat sheet with 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Rylie Theuerkauf of Tenafly, New Jersey, added 13 points, and Mia Woolfolk of Midlothian, Virginia, contributed nine points and five rebounds.

Charleston Southern was led by Tyonna Bailey of Newark, New Jersey, who scored 19 points. Caelan Ellis added 10 points for the Buccaneers, who shot 36% from the field and managed only five assists as a team against Georgia’s defensive pressure.

The Bulldogs built a 49-24 lead by halftime and continued to extend it after the break, leading 72-39 after three quarters. Georgia’s offensive rating of 140.8 on 69 possessions underscored a level of efficiency that proved insurmountable for the visiting Buccaneers, who posted an offensive rating of 80.9.

Georgia’s bench outscored Charleston Southern’s 53-16, highlighting the roster’s depth as the Bulldogs prepare for Southeastern Conference play. The victory maintained Georgia’s perfect start, a record that includes wins over Power Five opponents Florida State and Kansas.

Charleston Southern, which has faced a challenging nonconference schedule with losses to several major-conference opponents, opens Big South Conference play next week. Georgia will begin its SEC slate on the road against Mississippi on New Year’s Day.

The announced attendance was 1,972. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Georgia had a 99.50 percent probability to win the contest.
