Lehigh Rallies Past Brown in Women’s Basketball

FOUNTAIN HILL, Pa. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by missed opportunities and critical late-game execution, the Lehigh Mountain Hawks outlasted the Brown Bears for a 58-54 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Stabler Arena.

The contest, played before an intimate crowd of 485, saw both teams endure significant offensive droughts, but Lehigh made enough plays in the final minutes to secure the win and improve its season record to 3-5. Brown, which had its two-game winning streak snapped, fell to 5-3.

The game was a tale of contrasting strengths. Brown dominated the interior, outscoring Lehigh 36-24 in the paint and grabbing 11 offensive rebounds to the Mountain Hawks’ six. However, the Bears were plagued by inefficiency from beyond the arc and the free-throw line, shooting a frigid 4 for 21 on three-pointers and a costly 2 for 6 from the charity stripe. Brown also committed 17 turnovers, which Lehigh converted into 14 points.

Lehigh, while shooting a lower percentage from the floor overall, found a marginal advantage from deep, making seven three-pointers to Brown’s four, and, most decisively, capitalized at the free-throw line, converting 13 of 18 attempts. The Mountain Hawks also protected the ball better, turning it over only 13 times.

The game began at a deliberate pace, with Lehigh taking a 19-17 lead after a first quarter that featured early contributions from Belle Bramer. The Mountain Hawks extended their lead to 30-25 by halftime as Brown’s offense stalled, managing only eight points in the second period.

Emerging from the break, the Bears mounted their most sustained run of the game. A 19-point third quarter, fueled by Grace Arnolie and a persistent inside presence from Aima Ofunrein, allowed Brown to seize the lead and head into the final period with a 44-39 advantage.

The fourth quarter, however, belonged to Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks chipped away at the deficit, finally reclaiming the lead down the stretch. With the game on the line, Lehigh’s composure at the free-throw line proved the difference. Jessie Ozzauto, who orchestrated the offense throughout, calmly sank two free throws with 24 seconds remaining to extend the lead to 58-54. Brown had several chances to answer on its final possessions, but a series of missed three-point attempts sealed its fate.

Ozzauto, a guard from Algonquin, Illinois, was the engine for Lehigh, logging a near triple-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists in 38 minutes of action. Her backcourt mate, Belle Bramer of Los Gatos, California, provided a crucial scoring punch with a team-high 14 points. The Mountain Hawks also received a double-double from forward Leia Edwards of London, England, who tallied 11 points and 11 rebounds.

For Brown, the scoring was more balanced. Grace Arnolie of Vienna, Virginia, led the Bears with 12 points and six rebounds. Alyssa Moreland of Beverly, Massachusetts, and Aima Ofunrein of Round Rock, Texas, provided strong interior play, scoring 11 and nine points, respectively, while combining for 13 rebounds. Charlotte Adams-Lopez of North Attleboro, Massachusetts, matched Ozzauto’s playmaking with seven assists.

The game was a statistical oddity, with both teams finishing with identical possession counts (70) and matching totals in assists (8) and steals (8). Ultimately, Lehigh’s superior three-point shooting and clutch free-throw performance in the final quarter were the narrow margins required for victory.

Brown looks to rebound on the road Wednesday at Stonehill. Lehigh returns to action at home Wednesday against Cornell.
