Georgia Women Cruise Past South Carolina Upstate for Third Straight Win

ATHENS, Ga. (Interstat) — The Georgia Bulldogs used a dominant second-quarter surge and a stifling defensive performance to cruise past the South Carolina Upstate Spartans 78-44 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Monday night at Stegeman Coliseum.

Playing before a crowd of 1,406, the Bulldogs improved their record to a perfect 3-0, while the Spartans fell to 1-2.

The game was competitive in the opening period, with Georgia holding a narrow 16-10 lead after one quarter. The contest unraveled for the visiting Spartans in the second frame, as the Bulldogs unleashed a 27-point offensive explosion while their defense clamped down, limiting South Carolina Upstate to just 10 points. The 27-10 quarter gave Georgia a commanding 43-20 halftime advantage, a deficit from which the Spartans could not recover.

Georgia’s offensive efficiency was the story of the game. The Bulldogs scored 78 points on 68 possessions, translating to an impressive offensive rating of 113.9. They shot 50 percent from the floor, connecting on 28 of 56 attempts, and were effective from beyond the arc, making 8 of 19 three-pointers. Defensively, Georgia was relentless, forcing 25 Spartan turnovers and converting them into numerous transition opportunities. The Bulldogs also recorded 12 steals and blocked five shots.

South Carolina Upstate struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm, posting an offensive rating of just 69.6. The Spartans turned the ball over on 39 percent of their 63 possessions and shot 43 percent from the field. While they managed to outscore Georgia 18-21 in a higher-paced third quarter, the first-half hole was far too deep to escape.

Georgia’s attack was balanced and potent, led by Rylie Theuerkauf. The guard from Tenafly, New Jersey, poured in a game-high 19 points in just 24 minutes of action. She was instrumental in the first-half run that broke the game open.

She was complemented by backcourt mate Trinity Turner of Orlando, Florida, who added 12 points and three assists in 28 minutes. Dani Carnegie from Mount Vernon, New York, also reached double figures, scoring 17 points, including three shots from long range. In the frontcourt, Mia Woolfolk of Midlothian, Virginia, provided a strong interior presence with 11 points, and Zhen Craft from Waldorf, Maryland, facilitated the offense with a team-high five assists.

For South Carolina Upstate, the lone bright spot was the scoring of Cassie Gallagher. The guard from Cookeville, Tennessee, fought hard for a team-high 20 points, accounting for nearly half of the Spartans’ total offense. Emma Blair of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, added eight points, while Kinley Paterson from Perth, Australia, contributed four assists off the bench.

The game was the third of the season for both teams. South Carolina Upstate entered the contest with a split record, having defeated Erskine handily after a season-opening loss to Clemson. Georgia, meanwhile, continued its strong start to the campaign, having previously recorded decisive wins over Furman and Alabama State.

Looking ahead, South Carolina Upstate faces a quick turnaround, traveling to face Kentucky on Wednesday. Georgia’s next test comes on the road Thursday at South Carolina State.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Georgia entered the game as an overwhelming favorite with a 99.20 percent probability to win, a projection the Bulldogs fulfilled with a comprehensive performance on both ends of the court.
