Harvard Holds Off Saint John’s in Tight Women’s Basketball Season Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (Interstat) — In a tense, back-and-forth season opener, the Harvard Crimson women’s basketball team held off a persistent Saint John’s Red Storm squad for a 61-56 victory Friday night at Lavietes Pavilion.

A decisive third-quarter surge proved to be the difference for the Crimson, who improved to 1-0 on the young season. The Red Storm, coming off a season-opening win, fell to an even 1-1.

The game was a defensive struggle from the outset, with Harvard taking a 12-7 lead after a low-scoring first quarter. The Red Storm found their rhythm in the second period, outscoring the Crimson 16-14 to narrow the halftime deficit to just three points, 26-23.

The contest turned dramatically in the third quarter. Harvard’s offense ignited, pouring in 21 points while its defense tightened, limiting Saint John’s opportunities and building a crucial cushion. The Crimson took a 47-42 lead into the final frame.

Saint John’s refused to capitulate, chipping away at the Harvard lead throughout the fourth quarter. The Red Storm’s defense forced key stops, but they could never quite draw even, as the Crimson consistently answered with critical baskets and free throws down the stretch to seal the five-point win.

Harvard was led by a stellar performance from sophomore guard Karlee White. The Burbank, California, native played 27 minutes and scored a team-high 16 points, adding five rebounds and an assist. She was instrumental in the closing moments, sinking two clutch free throws with one second remaining to ice the game.

The Crimson also received a significant contribution from forward Abigail Wright. The Newton, Massachusetts, hometown product recorded a double-double with 11 points and seven rebounds, alongside two assists and a block, providing a strong interior presence.

For Saint John’s, the effort was spearheaded by Shaulana Wagner. The junior guard from Detroit was the game’s leading scorer, tallying 19 points in 29 minutes of action. She also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists, relentlessly attacking the basket to keep the Red Storm within striking distance.

The Red Storm’s defense was anchored by forward Brooke Moore. The Kennesaw, Georgia, native was a force in the paint, swatting away five Harvard shot attempts and pulling down eight rebounds to go with her nine points.

Another key performer for Saint John’s was Janeya Grant. The guard from Middletown, Connecticut, provided a vital offensive spark off the bench, leading the second unit with 15 points.

The game was characterized by its defensive intensity. Both teams scored 30 points in the paint and were nearly even in points off turnovers, with Harvard holding a slight 18-14 advantage. The Crimson’s ability to create a separation in the third quarter and then withstand Saint John’s final push ultimately secured the victory in front of 658 fans.

Harvard now looks ahead to a challenging road test at Michigan on Sunday. Saint John’s will aim to rebound quickly as they travel to face Quinnipiac on Tuesday.
