Walton’s 29 Points Lead George Mason Women Past Saint Joseph’s

FAIRFAX, Va. (Interstat) — Zahirah Walton scored 29 points and George Mason never trailed, delivering a commanding 85-59 victory over Saint Joseph’s in an Atlantic 10 Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at EagleBank Arena.

The Patriots, who swept the season series from the Hawks, improved to 20-8 overall and solidified their standing in the conference with a wire-to-wire performance. Saint Joseph’s, which had won three straight entering the contest, fell to 19-9.

The most important stretch of the game came in the second quarter, where George Mason effectively put the contest out of reach. Leading 21-17 after a competitive first period, the Patriots unleashed a 22-6 run over the first eight minutes of the second quarter. The surge transformed a four-point lead into a commanding 43-23 advantage, establishing a tone of dominance that Saint Joseph’s could not overcome.

Walton, a 5-foot-11 guard from Seattle, was the catalyst throughout. She scored 12 of her game-high total in the first half, adding four assists and a block. Her backcourt partner, Mary Amoateng of Baltimore, provided crucial support, netting 16 points, including a pair of three-pointers during the decisive second-quarter run.

George Mason’s defense was equally pivotal, forcing 10 Saint Joseph’s turnovers in the first half and converting them into 15 points. The Hawks struggled to find consistent offensive flow against the Patriots’ pressure, managing only 11 points in the second quarter on 4-of-13 shooting.

Saint Joseph’s, which entered the game allowing just 55.9 points per game, had no answer for George Mason’s balanced and efficient attack. The Patriots shot 50% from the field in the first half and finished the game with a 48% clip, while also connecting on 8 of 20 attempts from three-point range.

The Hawks showed brief signs of life after halftime, opening the third quarter with a 7-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 45-34. But Walton answered with a three-pointer and a jump shot on consecutive possessions, and Kennedy Harris followed with a three-point play to quickly push the lead back to 19 points. Harris, a guard from Hampton, Virginia, finished with 15 points.

George Mason’s lead ballooned to as many as 28 points in the fourth quarter as the Patriots’ reserves closed out the game. The Patriots dominated the paint, outscoring Saint Joseph’s 38-24 inside, and won the rebounding battle 42-33.

Faith Stinson led Saint Joseph’s with 15 points. Aleah Snead added nine points and Gabby Casey also had nine points with three assists, but the Hawks shot just 36% from the field as a team and made only 3 of 17 three-point attempts.

The game was a stark contrast to the teams’ first meeting on Jan. 18, a 66-59 George Mason win in Philadelphia that was closely contested throughout. This time, the Patriots left no doubt, leading for over 39 minutes and by double digits for the final 24 minutes of play.

With the win, George Mason reached the 20-win plateau for the season. Saint Joseph’s saw its three-game conference winning streak snapped.

An announced crowd of 846 at EagleBank Arena watched the Patriots control the tempo from the opening tip. George Mason set the tone early, opening the game on a 9-2 run and leading 21-17 after one quarter before breaking it open in the second.

Saint Joseph’s will look to rebound at home against Richmond on Saturday. George Mason hits the road for its next contest, facing Duquesne on Saturday.
