Davidson Tops Fordham in Defensive Atlantic 10 Contest
NEW YORK (Interstat) — Charlise Dunn scored 22 points, leading a decisive first-quarter surge that propelled the Davidson Wildcats to a 58-49 victory over the Fordham Rams in an Atlantic 10 women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Rose Hill Gym.
Davidson, which led wire-to-wire after scoring the game’s first six points, improved to 18-11 overall and 10-6 in conference play. Fordham fell to 10-18 and 4-12.
The most critical phase of the contest came in the opening minutes, as Davidson established a commanding early lead that Fordham could never fully overcome. The Wildcats raced out to a 20-6 advantage behind the hot shooting of Dunn, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Victoria Point, Australia. She connected on three 3-pointers in the first quarter alone, including one at the 8:56 mark for the game’s first points and another at the 3:49 mark that pushed the lead to 16-6. Davidson’s defensive pressure also forced several early Fordham turnovers, stifling the Rams’ offense and setting the tone for the evening.
Fordham, led by Carryn Easley’s 11 points, struggled to find consistent offense against a disciplined Davidson defense. The Rams shot poorly from the field and committed 22 turnovers, which the Wildcats converted into 18 points. Despite the early deficit, Fordham chipped away, using a 9-2 run late in the second quarter to pull within 28-25 at halftime. A layup by Ornella Niankan of Montreal brought the Rams to within three, the closest they had been since the opening minutes.
The third quarter proved pivotal in halting Fordham’s momentum. After the Rams cut the lead to 32-30 on a Lakresha Edwards 3-pointer, Davidson clamped down defensively. The Wildcats held Fordham to just four points over the final five minutes of the period, embarking on a 10-4 run to close the quarter with a 42-35 lead. Katie Donovan, who played a game-high 37 minutes, was instrumental during this stretch with key defensive plays and steady ball-handling.
Davidson then sealed the win in the fourth quarter by maintaining its composure and exploiting Fordham’s foul trouble. Dunn, who also grabbed five rebounds, continued to attack, scoring eight points in the final period, including a crucial turnaround jumper with 4:54 remaining that extended the lead to 50-46 after Fordham had once again closed the gap. The Wildcats made 10 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter to keep the Rams at bay.
Elena Alvarez Castellanos, a guard from Pamplona, Spain, provided vital support for Davidson with 10 points, while Donovan added 10 points, four rebounds and a block. For Fordham, Niankan finished with 10 points, two blocks and two steals, and Alexis Black of Washington, D.C., contributed nine points.
The Wildcats’ victory completed a regular-season sweep of the Rams, having won the previous meeting 74-50 in North Carolina on Jan. 14. Davidson has now won three of its last four games as it heads into its regular-season finale against Saint Louis on Saturday. Fordham, which has lost four of its last five, will conclude its season at Saint Bonaventure on Saturday.
An announced crowd of 376 watched the game at Fordham’s historic Rose Hill Gym.
