Late Aztecs Rally Edges Rams in Mountain West Clash

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — In a tense, defensive struggle that came down to the final possession, the San Diego State Aztecs held off the Colorado State Rams 64-61 in a Mountain West women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Viejas Arena.

The game, played before an announced crowd of 1,358, was a rematch of a Jan. 28 meeting won 46-44 by San Diego State. This contest followed a similar script, defined by physical defense and critical plays in the closing minutes.

The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the final 30 seconds with San Diego State clinging to a 62-61 lead. After a Colorado State timeout, the Rams set up a play for leading scorer Lexus Bargesser. The guard from Grass Lake, Michigan, who finished with a team-high 16 points, attempted a potential go-ahead 3-pointer with two seconds remaining. San Diego State’s Nala Williams, who had a strong all-around game with 14 points, three assists and two blocks, contested the shot and got a piece of it, securing the block. The Aztecs’ Kaelyn Hamilton grabbed the defensive rebound and was fouled, effectively sealing the victory.

The final quarter was a back-and-forth affair. Colorado State, which trailed by as many as seven in the period, closed the gap to a single point on a driving layup and subsequent free throw by Brooke Carlson with 44 seconds left, making it 62-61. San Diego State then missed a 3-pointer on its ensuing possession, setting the stage for the Rams’ final attempt.

San Diego State improved to 19-4 overall, while Colorado State fell to 18-7. The win gave the Aztecs a regular-season sweep of the Rams.

The game was characterized by stifling defense from both sides. San Diego State committed 12 turnovers, which Colorado State converted into 15 points. The Rams, however, managed only seven assists against five turnovers of their own, struggling to find consistent offensive flow against the Aztecs’ pressure. San Diego State’s defense was particularly effective inside, recording six blocks and limiting Colorado State to 20-of-53 shooting from the field.

Offensively, the Aztecs were led by a balanced attack. Kaelyn Hamilton scored 15 points, including a crucial fourth-quarter 3-pointer, and added a block. Naomi Panganiban contributed 14 points, and Williams filled the stat sheet with her 14 points, three assists and two blocks. Bailey Barnhard added nine points and two assists.

For Colorado State, Bargesser’s 16 points led the way, supported by 15 points from Carlson. Center Madelyn Bragg of Aberdeen, South Dakota, added seven points and two assists. The Rams dominated points in the paint, 26-18, and shot well from the free-throw line, making 16 of 20 attempts, but were ultimately undone by a 5-for-19 performance from 3-point range.

The first half set the tone for a low-scoring battle. San Diego State took an 18-16 lead after a first quarter that featured five ties. The Aztecs maintained a narrow 30-28 advantage at halftime, with neither team able to establish a significant run.

Colorado State’s most productive period was the third quarter, where they outscored San Diego State 21-18 to take a 49-48 lead into the final frame. A key factor was the Rams’ ability to capitalize on Aztec mistakes, scoring eight points off turnovers in the quarter.

The fourth quarter saw five lead changes. San Diego State appeared to take control with a 7-0 run, capped by Hamilton’s 3-pointer with 9:30 to play, giving the Aztecs a 55-49 lead. Colorado State chipped away, setting up the dramatic finish that was decided by Williams’ timely block on Bargesser’s last-second shot.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, San Diego State entered the game with a 72.5% probability of winning.

Colorado State travels to face New Mexico on Saturday. San Diego State continues its conference schedule on the road at Nevada, also on Saturday.
