Coastal Carolina Holds Off Old Dominion for Road Victory
NORFOLK, Va. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive grit and a pivotal second-quarter surge, the Coastal Carolina women’s basketball team secured a hard-fought 69-62 victory over Old Dominion on Wednesday night at the Constant Convocation Center.
The Chanticleers, who entered the contest with a 12-14 record, used a dominant 20-point second quarter to seize control, holding the Lady Monarchs to just nine points in the frame. That 20-9 period transformed a 16-13 first-quarter deficit into a 33-25 halftime lead, a margin Coastal Carolina would protect for the remainder of the game despite several Old Dominion rallies.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded late in the fourth quarter with Coastal Carolina clinging to a narrow lead. After Old Dominion’s En’Dya Buford converted two free throws to cut the deficit to 60-58 with just over a minute remaining, the Chanticleers’ composure was tested. On the ensuing possession, Coastal Carolina worked the ball to Tessa Grady, who drained a crucial three-pointer while being fouled. She completed the four-point play at the free-throw line, pushing the lead back to six points with 1:18 left. That play effectively stifled the Lady Monarchs’ final push, as the Chanticleers closed the game from the free-throw line.
Coastal Carolina’s win was anchored by a monumental performance from forward Tateyoina Harris. The 6-foot sophomore from Camden, South Carolina, recorded a double-double with 16 rebounds and nine points, adding two blocks and a steal in 29 minutes. Her work on the glass, which included a game-high five offensive rebounds, was instrumental in limiting Old Dominion’s second-chance opportunities and fueling Coastal Carolina’s transition game. This standout effort marked a significant resurgence for Harris, who had averaged just 3.0 points and 3.7 rebounds over her previous three contests.
Grady led all scorers with 22 points for the Chanticleers, including four three-pointers. Kristin Williams of San Diego contributed nine points, six rebounds and a team-high six assists, orchestrating the offense for 38 minutes. Kinsea Grimes of Mansfield, Texas, added 11 points and nine rebounds, just shy of a double-double.
Old Dominion, which fell to 15-11, was led by Simaru Fields of Gulfport, Mississippi, who scored 14 points. En’Dya Buford added 12 points and six rebounds, while Nakiyah Allen of Boyce, Louisiana, provided a spark off the bench with eight points and five rebounds in 18 minutes.
Statistically, the game was a battle of attrition. Both teams struggled from the field, with Coastal Carolina shooting 39.3% and Old Dominion managing just 32.9%. The difference came from beyond the arc, where the Chanticleers hit seven three-pointers to the Lady Monarchs’ three. Old Dominion won the rebounding battle 45-41, including 19 offensive boards, but committed 19 turnovers leading to 21 Coastal Carolina points. The Chanticleers turned the ball over 17 times, which Old Dominion converted into 22 points.
The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for Coastal Carolina and improved its record to 13-14. Old Dominion saw its two-game win streak end. An announced crowd of 2,127 watched the contest.
Coastal Carolina travels to face Georgia Southern on Saturday. Old Dominion will host James Madison, also on Saturday.
