Sun Devils Outlast Utes in Big 12 Clash

TEMPE, Ariz. (Interstat) — In a gritty, defensive-minded rematch of a one-point game from six weeks prior, the Arizona State Sun Devils used a decisive third-quarter surge and superior efficiency to pull away from the Utah Utes for a 71-61 victory in a Big 12 women’s basketball contest Wednesday night at Wells Fargo Arena.

A crowd of 3,051 watched as the Sun Devils, now 20-6 overall, avenged a narrow loss in their previous outing and improved their conference standing by clamping down on a Utah team that entered the night with a projected win probability of 57 percent. The Utes fell to 16-9.

The game was characterized by physical defense and offensive struggles, particularly for the visitors. Utah’s offensive woes were encapsulated by a season-high 20 turnovers, which Arizona State converted into 16 points. The Sun Devils, meanwhile, committed only 11 turnovers and capitalized on their opportunities, shooting an efficient 7 for 13 from three-point range and 14 of 15 from the free-throw line. Utah managed just 6-of-25 shooting from beyond the arc.

The first half was a tightly contested, back-and-forth affair. Arizona State established an early presence inside with Heloisa Carrera, who scored the game’s first four points. Utah’ Lani White and Maty Wilke kept the Utes close, with Wilke’s first-quarter three-pointer giving Utah an early spark. The Sun Devils led 15-11 after one quarter, but a 7-0 Utah run midway through the second, capped by a White three-pointer, briefly gave the Utes a 23-22 lead. Arizona State responded with a 9-2 spurt to close the half, taking a 33-30 advantage into the locker room after Gabby Elliott’s three-pointer and a layup from Carrera.

The most important part of the game unfolded in the third quarter, where Arizona State effectively sealed the outcome. The Sun Devils opened the period with a 9-2 run, stretching their lead to double digits for the first time. A three-pointer from Marley Washenitz, followed by another from Deborah Davenport, pushed the margin to 39-32. Utah’s offense, plagued by rushed shots and continued turnovers, could not mount a sustained response. While the Utes cut the deficit to five on a few occasions, Arizona State answered every time. The Sun Devils closed the third quarter on a 7-0 run, featuring another Washenitz three and a transition layup by Carrera, to take a commanding 52-39 lead into the final period.

Utah showed fight in the fourth quarter, opening with a 7-2 run to close within eight points. However, Arizona State’s senior leadership and composure at the free-throw line proved insurmountable. Every time the Utes threatened, the Sun Devils found a critical basket, often from Elliott or McKinna Brackens, or drew a foul to stop the clock and extend the lead. Utah never got closer than seven points in the final five minutes as Arizona State methodically closed out the game at the charity stripe.

Gabby Elliott led all scorers with 19 points for Arizona State, adding three steals. McKinna Brackens filled the stat sheet with 14 points, six assists and three blocks, controlling the paint defensively. Heloisa Carrera contributed 12 points and seven rebounds, while Washenitz played a game-high 40 minutes, scoring six points and anchoring the perimeter defense.

For Utah, Lani White shouldered the offensive load with 19 points. Maty Wilke added 17 points, and Chyra Evans finished with 11 points and three assists. The Utes’ bench was outscored, and the team’s five total assists underscored their difficulties in generating clean offensive looks against Arizona State’s active defense.

The Sun Devils’ victory completed a regular-season sweep of the Utes, having also won 69-68 in Salt Lake City on Dec. 31. The total points of 132 fell under the pregame over/under line of 125.5, reflecting the defensive nature of the contest.

Arizona State next travels to face rival Arizona on Saturday. Utah returns home to host Cincinnati on Saturday, looking to snap a two-game losing streak.
