Fordham Edges Saint Louis in Defensive Struggle
ST. LOUIS (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by grit over grace, the Fordham Rams edged the Saint Louis Billikens 42-39 in an Atlantic 10 Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday afternoon at Chaifetz Arena.
The game, witnessed by 8,000 fans, was a stark contrast to the teams’ previous meeting just three weeks prior, a 67-57 overtime victory for Saint Louis. This time, offensive execution was at a premium, with both teams combining for more turnovers than made field goals for long stretches. The Rams, however, leveraged a disruptive defense that generated 17 points off turnovers to snap a three-game losing skid and improve to 10-15 overall. The Billikens fell to 11-16.
The contest’s pivotal sequence arrived late in the fourth quarter, transforming a one-possession game into a decisive, if narrow, Fordham lead. Trailing 34-32 with under six minutes to play, the Rams engineered a critical 7-0 run. The surge began when Anastasija Veljovic of Mississauga, Canada, sank a 3-pointer off an assist from Carryn Easley with 5:29 remaining to put Fordham ahead 35-34. On the ensuing Saint Louis possession, Ornella Niankan of Montreal stole the ball from Jahda Denis, leading to a transition layup by Emma Wilson-Saltos that extended the lead to three.
After a Saint Louis timeout, Fordham’s defense forced a shot-clock violation. The Rams then executed in the half-court, as Kaila Berry of Brooklyn finished inside to cap the run and give Fordham its largest lead of the afternoon at 39-34 with just over two minutes on the clock. The Billikens would not get closer than three points the rest of the way.
Saint Louis center Alyssa Koerkenmeier of Saint Rose, Illinois, was a dominant force in defeat, recording a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds to go with a block and a steal in 39 minutes. Her interior presence kept the Billikens in contention, but Fordham’s collective defensive effort, particularly on the perimeter, limited Saint Louis’s supporting cast. Zya Nugent of Denison, Texas, added 12 points and eight rebounds for the home team.
Fordham’s victory was a product of balanced contribution and timely plays. Easley, a guard from Philadelphia, led the Rams with 11 points, six rebounds and three steals. Wilson-Saltos of the Bronx provided a crucial two-way spark off the bench, contributing seven points, six rebounds, four blocked shots and two assists in just 16 minutes. Her defensive presence, including two key blocks in the final minute, helped seal the win. Precious Omoshola of London anchored the paint with nine rebounds.
The game began as a low-scoring affair, with Saint Louis taking a 9-6 lead after the first quarter. The Billikens maintained a slim advantage for most of the first half, leading 19-16 at intermission. Fordham found a rhythm in the third quarter, outscoring Saint Louis 11-12 to tie the game at 27-27 heading into the final period, setting the stage for the decisive fourth-quarter push.
Both teams struggled mightily from the field, with Fordham holding a slight edge in points off turnovers, 17-9, which proved to be the differential in the game. Saint Louis won the battle in the paint, 24-20, but could not overcome 19 total turnovers.
The win marks a positive turn for Fordham, which had lost five of its last six games. Saint Louis, which entered as a heavy favorite according to advanced statistical projections, has now dropped four of its last five.
Fordham returns home to host Duquesne on Saturday. Saint Louis travels to face Dayton, also on Saturday.
