Doogan, Spiders Overwhelm Bonnies in Second Half
RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — Maggie Doogan delivered a dominant all-around performance with 23 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists, and the Richmond Spiders used a commanding second half to pull away from the Saint Bonaventure Bonnies for a 75-52 victory in Atlantic 10 women’s basketball on Wednesday night at the Robins Center.
The game was a rematch of a Jan. 3 meeting that Richmond won by 20 points, and this outcome followed a similar script after a competitive first half. The Spiders, now 21-4 overall and continuing their pursuit of the conference’s top spot, methodically broke down the Bonnies after halftime, turning a six-point lead into a decisive rout.
Saint Bonaventure, which fell to 14-12, stayed within striking distance for the first 20 minutes. The Bonnies trailed just 30-32 at halftime, having weathered an early Richmond push. The Spiders opened the game with a 12-4 run, but Saint Bonaventure answered with a 16-6 surge of its own, capped by a Laycee Drake turnaround jumper, to take an 18-16 lead early in the second quarter. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half, with the Bonnies’ Brillana Boyd scoring eight of her 13 points before the break.
The most important part of the game arrived immediately after halftime, as Richmond slammed the door with an 18-7 third-quarter advantage. The Spiders’ defense, which entered the night ranked among the nation’s best in several categories, completely stifled the Bonnies’ offense. Saint Bonaventure managed just seven points in the period on 3-of-15 shooting and committed five turnovers, which Richmond converted into easy transition opportunities.
Doogan, a 6-foot-2 junior from Broomall, Pennsylvania, was the catalyst throughout. She scored or assisted on 12 of Richmond’s 18 third-quarter points, showcasing her versatility with interior finishes, pinpoint passing and defensive presence. Her play ignited the decisive run that stretched a 32-30 lead to 50-37 by the end of the quarter, effectively putting the game out of reach.
The Spiders’ offensive balance proved overwhelming. Rachel Ullstrom complemented Doogan with 21 points, including three 3-pointers, while Alicia Newell added 11 points and five rebounds. Richmond shot 40% from the field and a sharp 10 of 29 from beyond the arc. More critically, they capitalized at the free-throw line, making 17 of 21 attempts, and won the turnover battle, forcing 17 Bonnies miscues while committing only nine.
Saint Bonaventure, which had won two of its last three games including an overtime thriller against Duquesne, could not sustain its early efficiency. After shooting 44% in the first half, the Bonnies collapsed to 20% shooting in the second half. Boyd finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, and Drake contributed nine points, seven rebounds, six assists and two blocks, but the team’s offensive rating of 79.0 on 66 possessions underscored its struggles against Richmond’s pressure.
The Spiders sealed the victory with a 27-point fourth quarter, their highest-scoring period of the night, as the Bonnies’ resistance fully faded. The final margin reflected Richmond’s superiority in nearly every facet: assists (11-6), steals (11-6), offensive rebounds (11-8) and points off turnovers (12-6).
With the win, Richmond maintains its position near the top of the Atlantic 10 standings and continues a season where its only losses have come against Rhode Island, Texas Christian, Texas and Fairfield. The Spiders have now won nine of their last ten games. Saint Bonaventure, seeking a winning conference record, saw its road record dip as it continues a challenging league schedule.
A crowd of 1,207 at the Robins Center watched the Spiders improve to 12-1 at home this season. Richmond now prepares for a quick turnaround with a road game at Davidson on Saturday. Saint Bonaventure will look to regroup on the road at VCU, also on Saturday.
