Davidson Leads Southern California Past Illinois in Big Ten Clash

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Interstat) — In a pivotal Big Ten clash with postseason implications, the Southern California Women of Troy weathered a furious fourth-quarter rally from the Illinois Fighting Illini to secure a 70-62 victory on Sunday afternoon at a raucous State Farm Center.

A crowd of 15,544 watched as Southern California, improving to 15-9 overall, built a commanding 20-point lead through three quarters only to see Illinois, now 16-8, storm back with a 25-point final period. The win was anchored by a dominant all-around performance from star guard Jazzy Davidson, who finished with 27 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in 40 minutes of action.

The game’s most critical phase was its opening act. Southern California came out aggressively, establishing immediate control with a 23-point first quarter while holding Illinois to just 13. Davidson and forward Kennedy Smith set the tone, combining for the game’s first nine points. Smith, who ended the day with 20 points, seven rebounds and a remarkable six blocks, won the opening tip and scored the first basket on a Davidson assist just eight seconds in. The Women of Troy’s defense was stifling early, forcing Illinois into difficult shots and converting turnovers into easy transition opportunities. By the end of the period, Southern California led by 10, a margin that would prove essential.

Illinois struggled to find any offensive rhythm in the first half, shooting poorly from distance and failing to capitalize at the free-throw line. The Fighting Illini went just 2 of 14 from three-point range for the game and 8 of 13 from the charity stripe. Southern California, while not shooting lights out, was more efficient, hitting 44.4 percent from the field and a crucial 10 of 12 free throws.

The Women of Troy extended their lead in the second and third quarters, methodically outpacing the Fighting Illini. Davidson was the engine, facilitating for others while also scoring at key moments. Her backcourt mate, Kara Dunn, provided vital secondary scoring with 14 points. By the start of the fourth quarter, Southern California held a seemingly comfortable 51-37 advantage.

The final period, however, transformed into a tense battle. Illinois, led by the dynamic guard play of Chicago native Destiny Jackson, mounted a relentless comeback. Jackson, who finished with 17 points and eight assists, spearheaded the charge, attacking the basket and creating for others. Forward Cearah Parchment of Whitby, Canada, recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, becoming a force inside during the rally.

The Fighting Illini’s defensive pressure intensified, forcing Southern California into several late turnovers. With just over two minutes remaining, an Aaliyah Guyton free throw capped a 21-8 Illinois run, cutting the deficit to a single possession at 58-56. The arena reached a fever pitch as the home team had multiple opportunities to tie or take the lead.

In the game’s decisive sequence, with under 90 seconds to play, Illinois had a chance to tie but turned the ball over. Davidson was fouled on the ensuing possession and calmly sank two free throws to push the lead back to four. Illinois missed a three-pointer on its next trip, and after securing the defensive rebound, Davidson was fouled again, hitting two more from the line to seal the victory with 14 seconds left. Southern California’s composure at the line in the final minute, making all four attempts, ultimately closed the door.

Defensively, Southern California’s rim protection was a defining factor, tallying eight total blocks led by Smith’s six. Illinois won the turnover battle, forcing 13 while committing 13, and had more steals and assists, but could not overcome its cold shooting and Southern California’s early explosion.

The victory marks Southern California’s third straight win and continues a positive stretch in conference play. Illinois sees a two-game winning streak snapped as it heads into the final weeks of the regular season.

Southern California next hosts Indiana on Thursday. Illinois will welcome Wisconsin on Wednesday.
