McNeese State Pulls Away Late to Defeat Incarnate Word
LAKE CHARLES, La. (Interstat) — The McNeese State Cowgirls used a dominant fourth-quarter surge and a relentless defensive effort to pull away from the Incarnate Word Cardinals for a 75-54 victory in a Southland Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Burton Coliseum.
The game, played before a crowd of 3,217, was effectively decided by a staggering discrepancy in ball security. Incarnate Word committed 29 turnovers, which McNeese State converted into 35 points. Conversely, the Cowgirls gave the ball away only seven times, leading to just eight points for the Cardinals.
For three quarters, the Cardinals managed to stay within striking distance despite their turnover woes. McNeese State led 35-28 at halftime and maintained a 47-40 advantage heading into the final period. The floodgates opened in the fourth, however, as the Cowgirls outscored Incarnate Word 28-14. A key sequence early in the quarter saw McNeese State force three consecutive turnovers, fueling a 9-2 run that stretched the lead to 56-42 and effectively sealed the outcome.
The most important part of the game was McNeese State’s defensive pressure, which was omnipresent from the opening tip and completely dismantled Incarnate Word’s offensive flow. The Cowgirls recorded 20 steals, with their backcourt of Jalencia Pierre and the team’s wing players consistently jumping passing lanes and harassing ball handlers. This defensive chaos directly fueled the offense, allowing McNeese State to score 40 points in the paint and 35 points off turnovers, overwhelming an Incarnate Word team that simply could not handle the pressure.
Lexi Alexander led a balanced McNeese State attack with 14 points and seven rebounds in just 24 minutes. Dakota Howard also scored 14, while Arianna Patton added 15 off the bench, including three 3-pointers. Jalencia Pierre orchestrated the offense with 13 points and seven assists, consistently finding teammates for easy baskets created by the defensive havoc.
Incarnate Word was led by Gwendlyn McGrew’s 14 points and Jorja Elliott’s 12 points and four blocked shots. Elliott also grabbed seven rebounds. The Cardinals shot a respectable 48.8% from the field but were severely limited by their 71 possessions, a direct result of the 29 giveaways.
McNeese State, which entered the game with an 83.5% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, improved to 20-4 overall and strengthened its position atop the conference. The Cowgirls have now won 11 of their last 12 games, with the only loss in that stretch coming in non-conference play against Northwestern State.
Incarnate Word fell to 10-12 and has lost three of its last four games. The Cardinals have struggled with consistency in conference play and will look to regroup defensively after being overwhelmed by McNeese State’s pressure for the second time this season. The Cowgirls also won the previous meeting on Dec. 29 by a score of 74-53.
Statistically, the game illustrated McNeese State’s control. The Cowgirls shot 42.7% from the field and dished out 20 assists on 32 made baskets, demonstrating efficient ball movement. They also controlled the glass with 11 offensive rebounds. Incarnate Word, despite its shooting percentage, managed only three assists for the entire game, highlighting the disruptive nature of the McNeese State defense.
McNeese State will look to continue its winning ways on the road next week with conference games at Northwestern State and Texas A&M-Commerce. Incarnate Word returns home to host New Orleans and Nicholls State, seeking to improve its standing in the Southland Conference race.
