Butler at Connecticut

HARTFORD, Conn. (Interstat) — The undefeated and top-ranked Connecticut Huskies host the Butler Bulldogs in a Big East women’s basketball matchup Saturday at XL Center, a game featuring the conference’s pinnacle and its struggling cellar dweller.

UConn (24-0, 13-0 Big East) continues its dominant march through the season, having won every game by at least 25 points since Dec. 31. The Huskies are coming off an 86-40 road rout of DePaul on Wednesday. Star guard Azzi Fudd, a national Player of the Year candidate, leads the charge, averaging 22.3 points over her last four games. She dropped 25 points in 28 minutes against the Blue Demons. The Huskies’ offense, averaging 89.5 points per game, operates with ruthless efficiency, while their defense allows a nation-leading 47.8 points per contest.

Butler (9-14, 3-9) enters on a three-game skid, most recently a 57-67 home loss to Villanova. The Bulldogs rank last in the Big East in scoring offense (59.5 ppg) and face a UConn team that throttled them 94-47 in Indianapolis just over a month ago on Dec. 28. Sophomore guard McKenna Johnson has emerged as a bright spot, scoring in double figures in three of the last five games, including a team-high 16 points against Villanova.

The matchup presents a stark contrast. UConn, pursuing a perfect regular season, showcases a deep, talented roster where any player can erupt on a given afternoon, as evidenced by Fudd’s 27-point, 7-rebound, 7-assist masterpiece against Tennessee on Feb. 1. Butler, meanwhile, fights for consistency and must find a way to generate offense against the nation’s most stifling defense. A monumental upset would require a near-perfect performance and a historic off-night from the Huskies.

Saturday’s contest is the first of two scheduled meetings between the teams this month, with a rematch set for Storrs on Feb. 28. For UConn, it’s the next step toward securing the top seed in the conference tournament. For Butler, it’s a daunting opportunity to measure itself against the gold standard of the sport. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. EST.
