Owls Pull Away From Tigers Behind Ennis, Strong Second Half

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Interstat) — The Rice Owls used a dominant second-half surge fueled by precision three-point shooting and a stifling defensive effort to pull away from the Memphis Tigers for an 82-65 victory in an American Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at FedExForum.

In a contest that was tightly contested for the first 20 minutes, Rice separated itself decisively after halftime, outscoring Memphis 49-33 over the final two quarters to secure its fifth consecutive win and improve to 19-3 overall. Memphis fell to 8-14.

The game turned in the third quarter. Leading by just a single point at 33-32 after a back-and-forth first half, the Owls erupted. They opened the third period with a 12-2 run, highlighted by three-pointers from Aniah Alexis and Dominique Ennis, to establish a double-digit lead they would not relinquish. Rice shot a blistering 9-for-19 from beyond the arc for the game, a 47.4% clip that proved a critical difference-maker against a Memphis team that managed only 3-for-11 from deep.

While Memphis consistently found success inside, scoring 44 points in the paint compared to Rice’s 22, the Tigers could not keep pace with Rice’s offensive efficiency or capitalize on their opportunities. Memphis shot 41.4% from the field overall and a damaging 4-for-10 from the free-throw line. Rice, conversely, was nearly flawless at the line, converting 25 of 29 attempts.

The Owls’ offensive execution was spearheaded by a balanced and potent attack. Dominique Ennis, a guard from Niagara Falls, Canada, led all scorers with 22 points, knocking down four three-pointers. Forward Shelby Hayes of Cedar Park, Texas, provided a major boost off the bench with 18 points, and guard Victoria Flores from Dallas added 15 points and five assists.

However, the engine for Rice was forward Hailey Adams. The San Antonio native delivered a complete performance with 12 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and two blocks in 36 minutes, controlling the glass and facilitating the offense. Her defensive presence, alongside Hayes’ five blocks, helped disrupt Memphis’s interior game as the contest progressed.

Memphis was led by guard Daejah Richmond of Cordova, Tennessee, who finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Forward Tamya Smith added 13 points, and guards Cori Allen and Jordan Hunter each chipped in 12 points. The Tigers struggled with ball security and converting possessions into points, posting an offensive rating of just 83.6 points per 100 possessions against Rice’s 109.7.

The most important sequence of the game came early in the third quarter, immediately after Rice’s narrow halftime lead. The Owls emerged from the locker room with heightened defensive intensity, forcing two quick Memphis turnovers. This defensive pressure ignited their transition game and opened looks from the perimeter. The consecutive three-pointers from Alexis and Ennis during the 12-2 run stretched the lead to 45-34 and forced a Memphis timeout. This burst established a tone of control for Rice, and Memphis never managed to cut the deficit below seven points the rest of the way. The Tigers were held without a field goal for over four minutes during this pivotal stretch.

Rice maintained its composure and extended its lead throughout the fourth quarter, answering every Memphis basket and sealing the game at the free-throw line. The Owls’ 26-point fourth quarter was their highest-scoring period of the afternoon.

The announced attendance was 1,204. Rice next hosts North Texas on Tuesday. Memphis travels to face UAB on the same night.
