UCLA at Illinois
Preview: UCLA Visits Illinois in Top Big Ten Clash
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Interstat) — The nation’s top-ranked team hits the road Wednesday as the UCLA Bruins, boasting an 18-1 record, face the Illinois Fighting Illini (15-5) in a pivotal Big Ten women’s basketball matchup at State Farm Center.
UCLA, whose lone loss came in nonconference play, has been dominant in league action, winning its last seven games by an average of 33.7 points. The Bruins are coming off an 80-46 rout at Northwestern on Sunday, where Gabriela Jaquez scored 19 points and Lauren Betts added 16 points and six assists.
The engine for UCLA is point guard Kiki Rice, who is averaging 15.8 points and 6.2 assists over her last six games. She dished out eight assists against Northwestern and scored 25 points in a win at Minnesota on Jan. 14.
Illinois, seeking a signature win to bolster its postseason resume, aims to rebound from a tough 81-75 road loss at Nebraska on Saturday. The Fighting Illini are 9-3 at home this season.
Forward Cearah Parchment is Illinois’ key performer, coming off a 25-point, 11-rebound double-double against Nebraska. She has recorded double-doubles in two of her last three games. Berry Wallace, who scored 22 points in the Nebraska loss, provides additional scoring punch.
The matchup pits UCLA’s high-powered offense, which has scored 90 or more points seven times this season, against an Illinois team that has shown resilience but inconsistency against top-tier opponents. The Fighting Illini are 0-3 this season against teams currently ranked in the AP Top 25.
This game is the first of a challenging two-week stretch for Illinois, which will face three other ranked conference opponents in its next four games. For UCLA, it’s another test in a conference schedule where it has faced little resistance thus far.
Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. EST Wednesday. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
