Manhattan Holds Off Rider in Metro Atlantic Women’s Basketball
NEW YORK (Interstat) — In a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball game defined by defensive pressure and a decisive second-quarter surge, the Manhattan Lady Jaspers defeated the Rider Broncs 58-46 on Monday night at Draddy Gymnasium.
A crowd of 182 watched as Manhattan improved to 5-13 overall, while Rider fell to 4-14.
The game’s pivotal stretch came in the second quarter, where Manhattan transformed a narrow 7-8 deficit after a low-scoring first period into a commanding 25-12 halftime lead. The Lady Jaspers outscored the Broncs 18-4 in the frame, fueled by a stifling defense that forced a series of Rider turnovers and contested shots. Rider managed just four points in the quarter, going nearly eight minutes without a field goal during one stretch.
Manhattan’s offensive execution was spearheaded by sophomore guard Brianna Davis of the Bronx, who scored a game-high 23 points. Davis was instrumental in the second-quarter run, hitting a stepback jumper and a 3-pointer as the Lady Jaspers built their double-digit cushion. She added two assists and two blocks while playing 36 minutes.
She was complemented by backcourt mate Hana Mühl, a freshman from Zagreb, Croatia, who orchestrated the offense with seven assists and added 11 points. Senior forward Colette Mulderig of Scranton, Pennsylvania, provided a consistent interior presence, scoring 12 points and anchoring the defense with two blocks.
Rider, which entered the game coming off a win over Sacred Heart, struggled to find any offensive rhythm until the second half. The Broncs shot poorly from the field and committed numerous turnovers against Manhattan’s active defense. A late push in the fourth quarter, where they outscored Manhattan 21-18, narrowed the final margin but never truly threatened the Lady Jaspers’ lead.
The Broncs were led by Aina Perez Mesquida of Manacor, Spain, who scored 11 points. Aliya McIver of White Plains, New York, added nine points, and Amany Lopez of Springfield, Massachusetts, contributed seven points off the bench.
The third quarter saw both teams trade baskets more effectively, with Rider scoring 13 points to Manhattan’s 15, but the Broncs could not cut the deficit to single digits. Every time Rider showed signs of life, Manhattan answered, often through Davis or Mulderig. A key sequence late in the third saw Manhattan convert free throws to push its lead back to 40-31 heading into the final period.
Rider’s most sustained offensive success came in the fourth quarter, led by Perez Mesquida and Kaylan Deveney of Medford, New Jersey, who hit two 3-pointers in the frame. However, Manhattan consistently responded to maintain control. A crucial 3-pointer from Manhattan’s Elisa Solé Sanchez of Sant Andreu de Llavaneres, Spain, with just over three minutes remaining extended the lead to 56-49 and effectively sealed the game.
Defensively, Manhattan’s ability to disrupt Rider’s sets was the story. The Lady Jaspers recorded nine steals and seven blocks, with Kristina Juric of Zagreb, Croatia, contributing two blocks and two steals. Rider finished with 21 turnovers, which Manhattan converted into 19 points.
The victory gives Manhattan a slight edge in the conference standings as both teams navigate the MAAC schedule. The teams are scheduled to meet again in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, on Thursday, Feb. 5.
Manhattan next hosts Quinnipiac on Saturday, Jan. 24. Rider returns home to face Iona on Thursday, Jan. 22.
The Interstat ELO system had projected Manhattan with an 89.5 percent probability to win the contest.
