Davidson Pulls Away From Saint Joseph’s in Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball
DAVIDSON, N.C. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by a prolonged scoring drought, the Davidson Wildcats grinded out a 48-36 victory over the Saint Joseph’s Hawks in an Atlantic 10 Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Belk Arena.
A crowd of 742 watched as the Wildcats, leveraging a decisive third-quarter surge and a stifling defensive effort, improved to 11-5 overall. The Hawks, who entered the contest on a four-game winning streak, fell to 11-4.
The game’s pivotal stretch began late in the first half and extended deep into the third quarter. After Saint Joseph’s guard Gabby Casey hit a jump shot with 4:25 remaining in the second period to tie the game at 14, the Hawks’ offense went ice cold. They would not score another field goal for over 12 minutes of game time, a drought spanning the final 4:25 of the second quarter and the first 8:04 of the third.
Davidson capitalized during this extended dry spell, though not without its own offensive inconsistencies. The Wildcats closed the first half on a 5-0 run, fueled by a Charlise Dunn layup and a Kyra Bruyndoncx finish, to take a 19-14 lead into the break. The Hawks’ two-point second quarter was a season low.
The Wildcats then seized full control to open the second half, embarking on a 13-2 run. The burst featured a Bruyndoncx 3-pointer and a Jasmine Timmerson layup, pushing the Davidson advantage to 32-16 with 3:04 left in the third quarter. Saint Joseph’s finally ended its field goal famine when Emily Knouse connected on a floating jumper at the 1:56 mark.
Casey, the Hawks’ standout guard from Quakertown, Pennsylvania, was the lone consistent offensive threat for the visitors. She finished with a game-high 19 points, adding three steals in 38 minutes of action. Her efforts kept Saint Joseph’s within distant reach, but no other Hawk scored more than four points.
Davidson’s victory was a product of balanced contributions and interior dominance. Dunn, a 6-foot-2 forward from Victoria Point, Australia, recorded a double-double with 10 points and two blocks, anchoring the paint. Bruyndoncx, a guard from Antwerp, Belgium, also scored 10 points. The Wildcats’ backcourt of Elena Alvarez Castellanos of Pamplona, Spain, and Ines Garcia Monje of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, combined for 12 points, five steals, and disruptive perimeter defense.
The Wildcats outscored the Hawks 16-10 in the critical third quarter to build an insurmountable 35-24 lead entering the final period. Saint Joseph’s showed a flicker of life with a 7-0 run early in the fourth, cutting the deficit to 39-31, but Davidson responded with consecutive baskets from Dunn and Edina Strausz to quell the rally.
Defense was the story for Davidson, which forced 23 Saint Joseph’s turnovers and converted them into 15 points. The Hawks shot under 30% from the field for the game. The Wildcats also controlled the glass, outrebounding Saint Joseph’s 42-31.
Saint Joseph’s, which had averaged 71.4 points per game during its recent win streak, was held to its lowest scoring output of the season. The Hawks will look to regroup when they host La Salle on Saturday.
Davidson, now 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play, hits the road to face Richmond on Saturday. The teams are scheduled for a rematch at Saint Joseph’s on Feb. 1.
