Syracuse Women Dominate Boston College in ACC Matchup
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Syracuse women’s basketball team used a dominant third-quarter surge to pull away from Boston College and secure a 90-65 victory in an Atlantic Coast Conference contest at the Carrier Dome on Sunday.
The Orange, improving to 22-7 overall, turned a competitive first half into a lopsided affair after halftime, outscoring the Eagles 29-18 in the pivotal third period. The win completed a regular-season sweep for Syracuse, which had defeated Boston College by 34 points just three weeks prior.
Boston College, which fell to 5-26, kept pace early behind the scoring of guard Jocelyne Grier. The Charlotte, North Carolina, native finished with a game-high 20 points. The Eagles trailed just 41-30 at halftime but could not withstand Syracuse’s offensive explosion coming out of the break.
The most important stretch of the game began early in the third quarter. With Syracuse leading 44-32, the Orange unleashed a decisive 14-2 run over a three-minute span to seize full control. The run was fueled by the interior presence of Izoje Uche and punctuated by perimeter shooting. Uche, a 6-foot-3 forward from Delta State, Nigeria, scored six points during the burst, including a layup off a Dominique Darius assist. Laila Phelia of Cincinnati capped the run with a 3-pointer, assisted by Uche, pushing Syracuse’s lead to 58-34 with 4:49 left in the quarter. Boston College never recovered, as the Orange lead ballooned to as many as 30 points in the fourth quarter.
Uche was the standout performer for Syracuse, delivering a highly efficient 24 points in just 22 minutes of action. She added three assists and three blocks, anchoring both ends of the floor. Her performance was a key factor in Syracuse’s overwhelming advantage in the paint and on the glass, where they outrebounded Boston College 18-5 on the offensive boards.
Syracuse’s offense operated with notable efficiency, shooting 49.3% from the field and posting an offensive rating of 116.7 points per 100 possessions. In contrast, Boston College struggled mightily from beyond the arc, connecting on only 2 of 19 3-point attempts, which contributed to an offensive rating of 85.0. The Eagles did find success at the free-throw line, making 19 of 20 attempts.
Beyond Uche, Syracuse received balanced contributions. Darius, a guard from Jacksonville, Florida, tallied 10 points and four assists. Phelia finished with 11 points, while reserves Madeline Potts of Doncaster, Australia, and Jasmyn Cooper of North Easton, Massachusetts, each added 10 and eight points, respectively.
For Boston College, Grier’s 20 points led the way. Kayla Rolph of Great Falls, Virginia, contributed 13 points, and Lily Carmody of Melbourne, Australia, added 10 points. The Eagles’ offense, however, was hampered by 35% shooting from the field and a season-low five assists.
The game drew an attendance of 4,058 to the Carrier Dome. Syracuse now looks ahead to the ACC tournament with momentum, having won four of its last six games. Boston College concludes a difficult regular season, having lost 10 of its final 11 contests.
