Towson Rallies Past Campbell in Women’s Basketball Road Win
LILLINGTON, N.C. (Interstat) — India Johnston scored 24 points and Towson used a dominant fourth-quarter surge to overcome a double-digit deficit and defeat Campbell 63-55 in a Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball game Friday night at John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center.
The Tigers, who entered as significant underdogs according to predictive metrics, flipped the script in the final period, outscoring the Fightin’ Camels 24-14 to snap a two-game road losing streak and improve to 16-12 overall. Campbell fell to 17-11.
The most important part of the game was Towson’s decisive 17-2 run that spanned the final five minutes of the third quarter and the opening minutes of the fourth, completely reversing the momentum and erasing what had been a 12-point Campbell lead. The Tigers, held to just 39 points through three quarters, found their offensive rhythm during this stretch, clamping down defensively to ignite their transition game.
Campbell had controlled the middle quarters, using a 22-point second period to build a 33-24 halftime lead. Olivia Tucker, who led all scorers with 19 points for the Fightin’ Camels, was instrumental in building that advantage, hitting key shots as Campbell’s defense stifled Towson’s attack.
The Tigers shot just 37.5% from the floor through three quarters and struggled with 12 turnovers. But the game turned when Towson’s defense intensified, forcing Campbell into rushed possessions and capitalizing on the other end. A critical sequence saw Tilda Sjökvist hit back-to-back three-pointers late in the third quarter, cutting deeply into the Campbell lead and setting the stage for the final push.
Johnston, a guard from Bear, Delaware, took over in the fourth. She scored 13 of her points in the final period, including a trio of three-pointers that stretched the Tiger lead. Her step-back three with 1:07 remaining pushed the Towson advantage to 60-55 and effectively sealed the victory. She added three assists.
Masyn Marchbanks provided crucial support for Towson with 12 points, including a key three-pointer during the game-changing run. Kayla Morris anchored the interior defense with three blocks.
For Campbell, Tucker’s 19 points came on an inefficient 8-of-22 shooting night. Jasmine Nivar added 11 points, three assists and five steals, but the Fightin’ Camels’ offense stalled when it mattered most, managing only two field goals in the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter. Campbell committed 16 turnovers, which Towson converted into 15 points.
The Tigers won despite being outshot from the field, with Campbell making 44% of its attempts to Towson’s 37.5%. The difference came from beyond the arc, where Towson connected on 11 of 23 three-point attempts compared to Campbell’s 4-of-12 shooting. Towson also made 10 of 14 free throws, while Campbell was 7 of 10.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Towson, which also edged Campbell 57-54 at home on Jan. 2. It marked a significant road win for the Tigers, who had lost four of their last five away from home.
Campbell’s defense, which entered the game allowing just 55.8 points per contest in conference play, was breached late as Towson’s ball movement and perimeter shooting proved decisive. The Tigers finished with an offensive rating of 97.4 points per 100 possessions, outperforming Campbell’s 89.1 in a grinding, possession-based game attended by 982 fans.
Towson next travels to face Monmouth on Thursday. Campbell will look to rebound on the road at College of Charleston on Sunday.
