Miles’ Triple-Double Leads TCU’s Fourth-Quarter Rally Past Iowa State
FORT WORTH, Texas (Interstat) — In a stunning display of late-game dominance, the Texas Christian Lady Frogs erupted for 31 points in the fourth quarter to erase a double-digit deficit and defeat the Iowa State Cyclones 80-73 in a pivotal Big 12 Conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Dickies Arena.
The victory, witnessed by 5,381 fans, was spearheaded by a historic triple-double from TCU guard Olivia Miles, who finished with 26 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Her performance, particularly in the final period, was the catalyst for a comeback that saw the Lady Frogs outscore the Cyclones 31-15 over the last 10 minutes.
Iowa State, which led for the vast majority of the contest, appeared in control after building a 58-49 lead through three quarters. The Cyclones had started strong, taking a 24-16 lead after the first quarter behind the interior play of Audi Crooks, who finished with 22 points and six rebounds. Jada Williams orchestrated the Iowa State offense with 15 points and 11 assists.
The game’s complexion changed entirely in the fourth quarter. TCU’s defense, anchored by 6-foot-7 center Kennedy Basham and her four blocks, tightened significantly, forcing Iowa State into difficult shots and disrupting their offensive flow. The Cyclones, who shot just 38.6% from the field for the game, managed only 15 points in the final frame on 5-of-18 shooting.
Offensively for TCU, Miles took over. She attacked the basket relentlessly, scoring 10 of her points in the fourth quarter and consistently creating opportunities for her teammates. Forward Marta Suárez provided a crucial double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Basham’s presence altered countless shots, contributing to TCU’s eight total blocks.
The most critical sequence came with just over two minutes remaining and TCU clinging to a 69-66 lead. Miles hit a stepback jumper to extend the lead to five, and after an Iowa State miss, she found Taylor Bigby for a three-pointer that pushed the advantage to eight with 54 seconds left, effectively sealing the game. Iowa State never got closer than five points the rest of the way.
TCU’s efficiency proved decisive. Despite shooting a lower percentage from three-point range (6 of 26) than Iowa State (8 of 22), the Lady Frogs capitalized on second chances with 11 offensive rebounds and took care of the ball, committing only four turnovers. They also made 16 of 21 free throws, including several clutch ones down the stretch from Miles.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Iowa State, which fell to 21-7 overall. The Cyclones were led by Crooks and Williams, with Addy Brown adding 11 points and seven rebounds. Their offense, however, stalled when it mattered most, managing just two assists as a team against six turnovers.
With the win, Texas Christian improved to 25-4 and solidified its position atop the Big 12 standings. The victory also marked a significant bounce-back after a narrow road loss to Colorado earlier in the month, demonstrating the team’s resilience and championship mettle.
The game’s total points, 153, went under the pre-game over/under line of 144.5. According to Interstat’s ELO system, TCU entered the game with an 83.8% probability to win.
Iowa State will look to regroup when it hosts Oklahoma State on Wednesday. Texas Christian, riding high after the dramatic comeback, hits the road to face Cincinnati on the same night.
