Oklahoma Outlasts Tennessee in High-Scoring Women’s Basketball Showdown

NORMAN, Okla. (Interstat) — In a high-octane, foul-filled Southeastern Conference women’s basketball clash defined by relentless offensive rebounding and trips to the free-throw line, the Oklahoma Sooners outlasted the Tennessee Lady Volunteers 100-93 on Sunday at Lloyd Noble Center.

The game, which featured 79 combined free throw attempts, was ultimately decided by Oklahoma’s dominance on the glass and its efficiency in converting second chances and free points. The Sooners, who improved to 21-6, hauled in 19 offensive rebounds, leading to a staggering 36-23 advantage in free throws made. Tennessee, which fell to 16-10, shot a higher percentage from the field and connected on 10 three-pointers to Oklahoma’s four, but could not overcome the Sooners’ extra possessions and parade to the charity stripe.

The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the final three minutes. With Oklahoma clinging to an 88-86 lead after a Talaysia Cooper layup for Tennessee, the Sooners executed a decisive 7-0 run that sealed the victory. The surge was fueled by the interior presence of Raegan Beers and the slashing ability of Sahara Williams. Beers converted a layup off a Payton Verhulst assist, and after a Tennessee miss, Williams was fouled on a drive and sank both free throws. Following another Lady Vols turnover, Williams again drew a foul and made one of two attempts, pushing the Oklahoma lead to 93-86 with just over two minutes remaining.

Tennessee, which had fought back from multiple deficits throughout the afternoon, could not mount a final rally. Jaida Civil missed a three-pointer on the ensuing possession, and Oklahoma effectively closed the game at the line, with Verhulst and Williams combining to make five of six free throws in the final 30 seconds to keep the Lady Vols at bay.

Oklahoma’s victory was anchored by a monumental performance from Raegan Beers. The 6-foot-4 junior from Littleton, Colorado, recorded a dominant double-double with 18 points and 18 rebounds in 32 minutes, controlling the paint on both ends. She was complemented superbly by Sahara Williams, who scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and Aaliyah Chavez, who added 21 points and four assists off the bench. Zya Vann contributed 15 points for the Sooners.

Tennessee was led by a stellar outing from Jaida Civil, who posted 21 points and 10 rebounds. Talaysia Cooper matched Williams with 22 points, and Nya Robertson provided a key scoring punch with 18 points, including four three-pointers. The Lady Vols’ offense was efficient, posting an offensive rating of 107.3, but their defense had no answer for Oklahoma’s interior attack, which produced 42 points in the paint and the game-defining rebounding edge.

The contest was a back-and-forth affair from the start, with eight ties and 11 lead changes. Tennessee’s three-point shooting kept pace with Oklahoma’s interior game early, but the Sooners’ consistent ability to earn free throws—attempting 46 to Tennessee’s 33—provided a constant pressure. Oklahoma led 47-45 at halftime and maintained a narrow margin throughout much of the second half before the final clinching run.

The win solidifies Oklahoma’s position in the upper tier of the SEC as the regular season winds down, while Tennessee continues to seek a signature conference road victory. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Oklahoma entered as a substantial favorite with a 79.2% win probability, and covered the pregame spread of -7.5. The combined score of 193 points sailed over the over/under line of 154.5.

Oklahoma next hosts Arkansas on Thursday. Tennessee travels to face LSU on the same night.
