Michigan State Women Rally to Top Minnesota on Road

MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — In a pivotal Big Ten Conference clash with postseason seeding implications, the Michigan State women’s basketball team delivered a commanding defensive performance in the second half to secure a 75-61 victory over Minnesota on Sunday at Williams Arena.

The Spartans, improving to 22-6 overall, overcame an early deficit and a stellar individual effort from Minnesota’s Tori McKinney by holding the Golden Gophers to just 25 points after halftime. Minnesota, which entered the game with a 21-6 record and as a 5.5-point favorite, saw its offense stagnate, shooting a collective 13 of 33 from the floor in the final two quarters.

The most important part of the game unfolded in the third quarter. Trailing 36-34 at halftime, Michigan State emerged from the locker room with renewed defensive intensity. The Spartans opened the period on a 10-1 run, fueled by transition opportunities and stifling defense that forced Minnesota into difficult shots and turnovers. The Golden Gophers managed only a single free throw in the first six and a half minutes of the quarter. That decisive stretch allowed Michigan State to seize a 44-37 lead, a margin they would not relinquish. The Spartans outscored Minnesota 24-13 in the quarter, turning a narrow halftime deficit into a 58-49 advantage heading to the fourth.

Michigan State’s balance proved too much for Minnesota to handle. Kennedy Blair, the Spartans’ top star, orchestrated the offense with 18 points and six assists, consistently breaking down the Golden Gophers’ defense. Jalyn Brown provided a critical scoring punch with a team-high 20 points, while Amy Terrian came off the bench to hit three 3-pointers and finish with 11 points. Grace VanSlooten added 10 points and three assists.

Minnesota was carried by the spectacular play of Tori McKinney. The junior guard from Minnetonka poured in a game-high 29 points on 11-of-23 shooting, including four 3-pointers, and added four assists. For long stretches, she was the Golden Gophers’ sole offensive threat. Sophie Hart contributed 10 points, three assists and two blocks, and Amaya Battle scored 11 points, but the rest of the lineup combined for just 11 points on 4-of-20 shooting.

The game began at a frenetic pace, with Minnesota taking a 16-10 lead after the first quarter behind eight early points from Battle. The second quarter was a back-and-forth affair featuring 10 lead changes. McKinney heated up, scoring 13 points in the period, including a deep 3-pointer and a driving layup in the final minute to give Minnesota its two-point halftime lead. The Spartans stayed close thanks to 12 points from Brown in the quarter.

The narrative completely shifted after halftime. Michigan State’s defensive adjustments limited McKinney’s clean looks and disrupted Minnesota’s offensive flow. The Spartans also began dominating the glass, finishing with a 42-34 rebounding edge, which included 15 offensive rebounds leading to 19 second-chance points.

Any attempt by Minnesota to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter was swiftly answered. When McKinney hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 52-49 with 8:15 remaining, Michigan State responded with a 7-0 run over the next two minutes, capped by a VanSlooten layup, to push the lead back to 10 points. The Golden Gophers would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

The victory was a significant bounce-back for Michigan State, which had suffered a 21-point loss to Michigan in its previous road game. It also marked a key road win against a conference rival projected by analytics to have a nearly 70% chance of victory. For Minnesota, the loss snapped a three-game winning streak and highlighted offensive inconsistencies that surfaced when McKinney’s supporting cast struggled to contribute.

A crowd of 7,088 at Williams Arena watched as Michigan State solidified its position in the upper tier of the Big Ten standings, while Minnesota will look to regroup on the road next week. The Spartans will host Ohio State next Sunday, while the Golden Gophers travel to face Illinois.
