Illinois Dominates Northwestern in Big Ten Women’s Basketball Matchup

EVANSTON, Ill. (Interstat) — The Illinois women’s basketball team delivered a commanding performance Sunday, overwhelming Northwestern from the opening tip and cruising to a 92-65 victory in a Big Ten Conference matchup at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

The Fighting Illini, now 19-8 overall, established dominance early with a blistering offensive display, scoring 27 points in the first quarter and 30 in the second to build a 57-33 halftime lead. The Wildcats, who fell to 8-19, never recovered from the initial onslaught.

The most important part of the game was Illinois’s immediate and sustained pressure, which created a decisive gap in the first half. The Illini forced Northwestern into 16 turnovers for the game, converting those mistakes into 27 points, while the Wildcats managed just six points off Illinois’s 10 turnovers. This relentless defensive effort, combined with efficient shooting, allowed Illinois to build a 24-point halftime advantage that Northwestern never seriously threatened.

Illinois showcased remarkable offensive balance and efficiency. The Illini shot 50% from the field, connecting on 35 of 70 attempts, and were particularly lethal from beyond the arc, making 12 of 18 three-pointers. Their offensive rating of 124.8 points per 100 possessions underscored a highly productive performance. Northwestern, by contrast, shot 45.7% but attempted 24 fewer field goals and managed only five three-pointers on 11 tries.

Cearah Parchment led the way for Illinois with a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in 31 minutes. The forward from Whitby, Canada, also contributed three assists. She was complemented by a strong backcourt performance from Destiny Jackson, a Chicago native who tallied 19 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Jasmine Brown-Hagger added 18 points and six rebounds, while Berry Wallace scored 17 points and Maddie Webber chipped in 13.

Northwestern was led by Tayla Thomas, who scored a game-high 25 points to go with six rebounds. Grace Sullivan added 13 points and Xamiya Walton finished with 12. The Wildcats were hampered by ball-handling issues, committing 16 turnovers that led directly to the Illini’s transition opportunities and points in the paint, where Illinois held a 32-22 advantage.

The game was a stark reversal from the teams’ previous meeting on Jan. 18, which Illinois narrowly won 74-71 at home. This time, the Illini left no doubt, controlling the tempo and the glass, out-rebounding Northwestern 40-28 and pulling down 12 offensive rebounds.

With the win, Illinois continues a strong stretch of conference play, having won three straight. Northwestern, meanwhile, has lost four of its last five. The announced attendance was 3,046.

Illinois next travels to face Iowa on Thursday. Northwestern will visit Maryland on Wednesday.
