Huskies Overpower Wildcats to Stay Undefeated in Big East Clash

BRYN MAWR, Pa. (Interstat) — The top-ranked Connecticut Huskies, facing a rare early challenge, used a dominant third-quarter surge to pull away from the Villanova Wildcats and remain undefeated with an 83-69 victory in a Big East women’s basketball game Wednesday night.

A sold-out crowd of 3,719 at The Pavilion saw the Huskies (28-0, 16-0 Big East) extend their remarkable start to the season, but not before the Wildcats (21-6, 12-4) pushed them deep into the first half. The game’s pivotal moment arrived after halftime, as Connecticut transformed a narrow four-point lead into a commanding 20-point advantage with a decisive 26-12 third-quarter run.

The Huskies, who led 37-40 at the break, came out of the locker room with heightened defensive intensity. They forced a series of Villanova turnovers and turned them into easy transition baskets, sparking a 15-4 run over the first five minutes of the third period. That stretch effectively broke the game open, as Villanova’s offense, which had shot efficiently in the first half, went cold against Connecticut’s swarming defense.

Sophomore forward Sarah Strong, a Durham, North Carolina, native, was the catalyst for Connecticut, finishing with 21 points, four assists and three blocks. Her versatility on both ends of the floor was central to the Huskies’ third-quarter explosion, where she scored eight points and anchored the defensive effort.

Guard Azzi Fudd, from Arlington, Virginia, led all scorers with 25 points and added four assists, providing a steady offensive hand throughout. Guard Ashlynn Shade of Noblesville, Indiana, contributed 13 points and five assists, while the Huskies’ depth was on display with key minutes from reserves like Blanca Quinonez of Milagro, Ecuador, who had four steals.

Villanova was led by a stellar performance from guard Jasmine Bascoe of Milton, Canada, who played all 40 minutes and tallied 26 points and seven assists. Forward Denae Carter, a Philadelphia product, added 21 points and three blocks, repeatedly challenging Connecticut inside. The Wildcats started strong, leading 22-19 after a back-and-forth first quarter and staying within a single possession for much of the first half behind the scoring of Bascoe and Carter.

Ultimately, Connecticut’s overwhelming advantages in key statistical categories proved decisive. The Huskies outscored Villanova 36-20 in the paint and converted 28 points off Wildcat turnovers, compared to just 12 points off turnovers for the home team. That margin in points off mistakes was the difference on a night where both teams struggled with ball security at times.

The victory was Connecticut’s 16th in Big East play this season and avenged a 99-50 win over the same Wildcats team in Storrs just over a month ago. Villanova, which entered the game on a five-game winning streak, saw its hopes of a signature upset dashed by Connecticut’s relentless second-half execution.

Interstat’s ELO system had given Connecticut a 96.10 percent probability to win, and the Huskies lived up to that billing despite the early test. The total score of 152 points went over the betting over/under line of 138.5.

Connecticut continues its pursuit of a perfect regular season with a home game against Providence on Sunday. Villanova, which saw its six-game home winning streak snapped, will look to rebound when it hosts Marquette, also on Sunday.
