Late Rally Falls Short for Austin Peay in Loss to Central Arkansas
CONWAY, Ark. (Interstat) — In a game defined by runs and resilience, the Central Arkansas Bears held off a furious fourth-quarter rally by the Austin Peay Governors to secure a 67-63 victory in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Wednesday night at the Farris Center.
The Bears, improving to 17-10 overall, built a commanding lead through three quarters, only to see the Governors, now 14-11, storm back with a 26-point final period that turned a potential blowout into a tense final possession.
Central Arkansas established control early, using its size and activity on the offensive glass to create extra opportunities. The Bears outrebounded Austin Peay 13-6 on the offensive end, leading to a 38-30 advantage in points in the paint. A 19-point first quarter set the tone, and despite a sluggish offensive stretch in the middle periods, the Bears maintained a double-digit cushion for much of the night, leading 45-37 heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter belonged to Austin Peay’s Anovia Sheals. The junior guard from Daytona Beach, Florida, erupted, scoring 15 of her game-high 23 points in the final frame. Her personal 7-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer with 3:04 remaining, brought the Governors within two points at 60-58, electrifying the small crowd of 684 and setting up a dramatic finish.
Central Arkansas responded with crucial plays from its balanced attack. Jenna Cook of Cabot, Arkansas, answered Sheals’ three with one of her own on the ensuing possession, pushing the lead back to five. After a Sheals jumper made it 63-60, Cheyanne Kemp of Morrilton, Arkansas, hit a tough jump shot with 2:34 left to extend the margin.
Austin Peay had a chance to tie in the final minute. Trailing 65-63 after a Mya Williams three-pointer with 18 seconds left, the Governors forced a turnover and had a transition opportunity. Sheals drove to the basket but had her layup blocked by Linda Amaning with 26 seconds remaining. The Bears secured the rebound, and Kemp was fouled. She made one of two free throws to make it a three-point game.
On the final possession, Austin Peay’s Jim’Miyah Branton found Williams for a potential game-tying three-point attempt as time expired, but the shot from the Waxahachie, Texas, native was off the mark, sealing the win for the Bears.
Beyond Sheals’ 23 points, Austin Peay got 14 points from Jade Rucker of Tupelo, Mississippi, and 13 from Williams. Branton, from Miami, Florida, facilitated the offense with eight assists. Central Arkansas was led by 14 points each from Cook and Kemp. Shae Littleford added 12 points, and Bree Stephens contributed 11 points, five assists and three blocks, anchoring the Bears’ interior defense.
Statistically, the game was remarkably even. Both teams shot nearly 47% from the field, with Austin Peay holding a slight edge from three-point range (8-of-20 to 5-of-16). The Governors also forced 15 turnovers, converting them into 18 points. The decisive difference came at the free-throw line, where Central Arkansas attempted 23 free throws to Austin Peay’s 13, making 14, and on the offensive glass, where the Bears’ 13 rebounds led to critical second-chance points.
The win keeps Central Arkansas in strong position in the conference standings, while Austin Peay’s valiant comeback effort fell just short, extending a recent skid for the Governors. Both teams return to action Saturday, with Central Arkansas traveling to face West Georgia and Austin Peay hosting Bellarmine.
