PROVO, Utah (Interstat) — In a game defined by a blistering start and a resilient finish, the Cincinnati Bearcats women’s basketball team delivered a significant upset on the road Tuesday night, defeating the BYU Cougars 76-67 at the Marriott Center.
The most important part of the game was unquestionably the first quarter, where Cincinnati established a lead it would never relinquish. The Bearcats erupted for 29 points in the opening period, showcasing an offensive efficiency that caught the home team flat-footed. Mya Perry, Cincinnati’s standout guard from Reynoldsburg, Ohio, set the tone early, scoring 10 of her game-high 32 points in the first quarter. Her step-back three-pointer with 48 seconds left in the period capped the early outburst and gave Cincinnati a 29-25 lead, a margin built despite BYU’s own strong 25-point quarter.
The Bearcats’ early success was fueled by aggressive defense and capitalizing on Cougar mistakes. After the high-scoring first, the two teams combined for just 22 points in the second quarter, with Cincinnati taking a 40-36 lead into halftime.
BYU, which entered the game with an 18-9 record and was an overwhelming favorite according to pregame projections, struggled to find consistent offense outside of bursts from Delaney Gibb, who finished with 20 points, and Olivia Hamlin, who added 16. The Cougars shot just 40.7 percent from the field and were hampered by Cincinnati’s 11 steals and disruptive defense.
Cincinnati, now 10-17, managed the game expertly down the stretch. After BYU closed to within 61-59 with just over five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Bearcats responded with key plays. Perry hit a critical three-pointer off an assist from Reagan Jackson to push the lead back to five. Perry’s 32-point performance was a season-high and came on an efficient 10-of-18 shooting night, including 4-of-8 from three-point range. She added a block and a steal in 32 minutes. Jackson, a guard from Fort Worth, Texas, provided vital support with 16 points and four assists. Kylie Torrence of High Point, North Carolina, contributed 11 points and nine rebounds, just shy of a double-double.
