Buffaloes Hold Off Wildcats in Big 12 Road Victory
TUCSON, Ariz. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a singular, spectacular performance, the Colorado Buffaloes weathered a career night from Arizona’s Lani Cornfield to secure a 78-70 victory in a Big 12 women’s basketball contest Tuesday night at McKale Center.
The game, played before a crowd of 5,393, was a tale of two offenses: one fueled by a relentless individual effort and the other a balanced, persistent attack that ultimately proved more sustainable. Colorado improved to 19-8 overall, while Arizona fell to 11-15.
The most important part of the game was the breathtaking display by Arizona guard Lani Cornfield, who single-handedly kept the Wildcats in contention from start to finish. The sophomore from Gowanda, New York, poured in a game-high 25 points and dished out 8 assists in 34 minutes, orchestrating nearly every Arizona offensive surge. Her scoring came in flurries, answering Colorado runs with deep three-pointers, crafty drives, and timely mid-range jumpers. Despite her heroics, Colorado’s collective strength and crucial defensive stops in the final quarter provided the decisive edge.
Colorado established control early, leveraging its interior presence. A quick layup by Zyanna Walker opened the scoring, and the Buffaloes built a 23-19 lead after the first quarter despite an early three-pointer from Arizona’s Sumayah Sugapong, who finished with 14 points. The Buffaloes’ lead fluctuated but remained intact throughout a tightly contested first half, with Cornfield’s playmaking keeping Arizona within four points at the break, 36-35.
The third quarter saw the game’s momentum swing wildly. Arizona, powered by Cornfield, mounted a serious challenge. She scored or assisted on a string of baskets, including a three-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer that capped a personal 5-0 run and cut Colorado’s lead to just 55-57 heading into the final period. That sequence electrified the home crowd and set the stage for a tense finale.
However, Colorado responded with the poise of a team battling for postseason positioning. Anaëlle Dutat, the sophomore from Cesson, France, led the Buffaloes with 20 points and 9 rebounds, providing a consistent scoring threat. Her backcourt mate, Tabitha Betson, added 15 points and 4 assists, while Walker contributed 13 points. Their combined effort counteracted Cornfield’s brilliance.
The fourth quarter was a testament to Colorado’s defensive resilience. After Arizona drew within two points early in the period, the Buffaloes clamped down. They held the Wildcats to just 13 points in the final frame, forcing key turnovers and contested shots. A critical sequence saw Colorado extend a 67-63 lead with under five minutes to play, as Betson and Walker scored on consecutive possessions to push the advantage to eight. Arizona never recovered, as Colorado closed the game on an 11-7 run to seal the victory.
Desiree Wooten added 10 points for Colorado, which shot efficiently in the second half to maintain its lead. For Arizona, Molly Ladwig scored 9 points, but the Wildcats could not find a consistent secondary scorer to fully complement Cornfield’s outstanding effort. Tanyuel Welch contributed 7 points in 38 minutes for the Wildcats.
The win completed a regular-season sweep for Colorado, which defeated Arizona 75-56 in Boulder on Dec. 31. The Buffaloes have now won four of their last five games. Arizona has lost three straight.
Colorado, which entered the game as a 9.5-point favorite according to sportsbooks, saw the total score of 148 surpass the over/under line of 133.5. Interstat’s ELO system had given the Buffaloes a 72.6 percent probability to win.
Colorado next hosts Texas Tech on Saturday. Arizona travels to face Baylor, also on Saturday.
