Gauchos Hold Off Mustangs in Big West Conference Matchup

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a decisive second-quarter surge and a standout individual performance, the UC Santa Barbara women’s basketball team secured a 63-54 victory over Cal Poly on Saturday at the Thunderdome.

The Gauchos, improving to 17-7 overall and in Big West Conference play, used a 21-point second period to build a commanding 36-22 halftime lead that the Mustangs could not overcome, despite a stronger second-half effort. Cal Poly fell to 3-22.

UC Santa Barbara guard Zoe Borter, a sophomore from Beaverton, Oregon, led all scorers with 18 points, adding three rebounds and three assists in 37 minutes. Her backcourt partner, Madison Naro, facilitated the offense with a game-high six assists and contributed 10 points.

The Gauchos seized control with a 14-2 run spanning the late first and early second quarters, turning a narrow 15-12 edge into a 29-14 advantage. The run was fueled by perimeter shooting and defensive stops, hallmarks of the Gauchos’ first-half performance where they shot 7 of 16 from three-point range. For the game, UC Santa Barbara made nine three-pointers compared to Cal Poly’s four, a 27-point to 12-point disparity that proved critical.

Cal Poly, which scored just 22 points in the first half on 8-of-28 shooting, found more rhythm after the break. The Mustangs outscored the Gauchos 14-9 in the third quarter, led by Charish Thompson, who finished with a team-high 11 points. A three-pointer by Dulci Vail with 2:25 remaining in the fourth quarter brought Cal Poly within four points at 52-48, representing the closest the Mustangs had been since the opening minutes of the second quarter.

The response from UC Santa Barbara was immediate and decisive. On the ensuing possession, Borter drove for a layup while being fouled and completed the three-point play. After a defensive stop, Skylar Burke converted two free throws to push the lead back to nine points with 1:13 left, effectively sealing the game. The Gauchos scored 12 points off eight Cal Poly turnovers, while the Mustangs managed only four points off nine UC Santa Barbara giveaways.

Thompson was the lone Mustang in double figures. Vanessa McManus added eight points and six rebounds, and Arissa Garcia scored nine points. For UC Santa Barbara, Olivia Bradley of Adelaide, Australia, provided nine points, six rebounds and two assists, while Júlia Puente-Valverde of Barcelona, Spain, contributed eight points, four rebounds and two blocks.

The game was a defensive struggle for long stretches, with both teams shooting under 41% from the field. UC Santa Barbara held a slight efficiency edge, scoring 0.955 points per possession to Cal Poly’s 0.844. The Gauchos also won the battle in the paint, 22-16.

An announced crowd of 607 at the Thunderdome saw UC Santa Barbara complete a regular-season sweep of the Central Coast rivalry, having also won 61-51 in San Luis Obispo on Jan. 22. The victory keeps the Gauchos in the upper tier of the Big West standings, while Cal Poly’s losing streak extended to five games.

Cal Poly continues its season at home against Hawaii on Thursday. UC Santa Barbara travels to face Cal State Northridge, also on Thursday.
