Princeton Women Dominate Second Half to Rout Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Princeton Tigers used a dominant second-half defensive performance to pull away from the Cornell Big Red for a 59-38 victory in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday at Newman Arena.

Princeton, which entered the contest with a 20-3 overall record, shook off a sluggish first half to outscore Cornell 44-15 over the final two quarters. The Tigers’ defense was the catalyst, holding the Big Red to just five points in the decisive third quarter and forcing 19 turnovers in the game.

The contest was a defensive struggle from the outset. Princeton led 10-9 after a first quarter marked by poor shooting from both sides. The Tigers’ offensive woes deepened in the second period, as they managed only five points. Cornell took advantage, closing the half on a 7-0 run to take a 23-15 lead into the break. The Big Red’s Paige Engels capped the half with a layup just before the buzzer.

The complexion of the game changed entirely after halftime. Princeton emerged from the locker room with renewed energy, immediately attacking the basket and tightening its defensive pressure. The Tigers opened the third quarter with a 10-2 run to reclaim the lead, a surge fueled by layups from Fadima Tall and Olivia Hutcherson.

Princeton’s defense completely stifled Cornell’s offense for the remainder of the period. The Big Red went scoreless for over six minutes and managed only a single free throw from Rachel Kaus and a late jumper from Clarke Jackson in the quarter. Meanwhile, the Tigers’ offense found its rhythm. Skye Belker and Grace O’Sullivan connected on three-pointers, and Madison St. Rose contributed four points from the free-throw line as part of a 23-point quarter for Princeton, which entered the final period with a commanding 38-28 advantage.

The Tigers continued to pour it on in the fourth quarter, opening with a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 16 points and effectively seal the game. St. Rose was instrumental in closing out the win, scoring eight of her team-high 15 points in the final frame, including several driving layups.

St. Rose, a guard from Old Bridge, New Jersey, led all scorers with 15 points and added seven rebounds for Princeton. Tall, a forward from Silver Spring, Maryland, recorded a double-double with 11 points and six rebounds, while Belker, a guard from Los Angeles, contributed 12 points, four rebounds and two assists.

Cornell, which fell to 8-15, was led by Clarke Jackson of Columbus, Ohio, who scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds. Emily Pape of Park Ridge, Illinois, added four points and six rebounds for the Big Red.

Statistically, Princeton’s defense was the story. The Tigers held Cornell to 31% shooting from the field and an offensive rating of just 64.7 points per 100 possessions. Princeton also dominated inside, outscoring Cornell 32-12 in the paint and securing 14 offensive rebounds that led to 13 second-chance points. The Tigers’ 12 steals directly contributed to 13 points off turnovers.

Princeton improved its Ivy League record with the win, while Cornell continued to search for consistency in conference play. The victory also served as a bounce-back performance for Princeton, which suffered a loss at Columbia just one day earlier.

The announced attendance at Newman Arena was 216.

Princeton next hosts Brown on Feb. 21. Cornell travels to face Harvard on the same date.
