Campbell Pulls Away From Hofstra in Second Half for Conference Win
LILLINGTON, N.C. (Interstat) — A decisive third-quarter surge propelled the Campbell women’s basketball team to a 58-47 victory over Hofstra in a Colonial Athletic Association contest Friday night at the John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center.
The game’s pivotal shift came after halftime. Trailing 27-23 at the intermission, the Fightin’ Camels erupted for 17 points in the third quarter while holding the Pride to just 11, transforming a narrow deficit into a 40-38 lead entering the final period. Campbell’s defense stifled Hofstra throughout the second half, limiting the visitors to 20 total points after the break.
Campbell guard Jasmine Nivar, a sophomore from Apex, North Carolina, led all scorers with 17 points, adding three assists in 37 minutes. Her backcourt partner, Olivia Tucker of Durham, contributed 13 points, two assists and a block. Forward Gianni Boone provided crucial interior scoring with 14 points, helping Campbell to a 28-22 advantage in points in the paint.
Hofstra, which fell to 4-19 overall and in conference play, was led by Chloe Sterling’s 14 points. Alarice Gooden of Brampton, Canada, tallied 11 points and five assists, while Emma Von Essen added 11 points, all in the first half. The Pride’s offense, which had shown life early, was hampered by 13 turnovers that Campbell converted into 13 points.
The first half was a tightly contested, low-scoring affair. Hofstra built its largest lead at 19-13 midway through the second quarter following a 10-0 run keyed by Gooden and Sterling. Campbell, however, closed the half on a 10-4 spurt, capped by a Jasmine Felton 3-pointer just before the buzzer, to trim the margin to four and set the stage for their second-half takeover.
Campbell improved to 16-9 overall and 10-6 in the CAA. The Fightin’ Camels’ defensive pressure was a constant, recording seven steals and five blocks. N’na Konate, a 6-foot-3 center from Switzerland, anchored the interior with five points, three blocks and several key defensive rebounds in just 14 minutes.
The announced attendance was 1,072. Campbell next travels to face UNC Wilmington on Sunday. Hofstra continues its road trip at North Carolina A&T on Sunday.
