Dominant Rice Rolls Past Wichita State in Women’s Basketball

HOUSTON (Interstat) — The Rice women’s basketball team delivered a commanding performance Friday night, overwhelming Wichita State 80-42 in an American Athletic Conference matchup at Tudor Fieldhouse.

The Owls, improving to 21-3 overall, seized control from the opening tip and never relented, showcasing a balanced offensive attack and stifling defense against a Shockers squad that fell to 5-21.

Rice established its dominance in the first quarter, outscoring Wichita State 23-11. The tone was set early as Hailey Adams scored on a layup for the game’s first points and Aniah Alexis followed with a 3-pointer. The Owls’ ball movement was crisp, with Adams and Victoria Flores combining for multiple assists in the opening period. Wichita State struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Rice’s pressure, committing turnovers that the Owls quickly converted into points.

The onslaught continued in the second quarter as Rice extended its lead. Louann Battiston came off the bench to provide a spark, hitting a pair of 3-pointers, while Kennedy Clifton made her presence felt defensively with several blocks. The Owls took a 43-19 advantage into halftime, having held the Shockers to just eight points in the period.

Any hope of a Wichita State rally was extinguished in the third quarter. Rice opened the second half with a 10-2 run, fueled by Dominique Ennis and Flores. Ennis, the game’s leading scorer, was particularly effective, driving to the basket and drawing fouls while also connecting from beyond the arc. The Owls’ lead ballooned to as many as 38 points in the period, effectively putting the game out of reach.

The fourth quarter saw both teams utilize their benches extensively. Rice’s reserves maintained the defensive intensity, with Mylee Guinn hitting a late 3-pointer to reach the 80-point mark. Wichita State’s Abby Cater led her team with 11 points, but the Shockers shot poorly from the field throughout the night and were outrebounded decisively.

Ennis finished with 18 points to lead Rice. Alexis added 13 points, while Flores contributed 10 points and five assists. Adams filled the stat sheet with nine points, six assists and two blocks. For Wichita State, Treasure Thompson scored five points and recorded multiple steals and a block.

The most important part of the game was Rice’s immediate and overwhelming start. The Owls scored the first seven points, forced multiple early turnovers and built a double-digit lead before the game was six minutes old. This explosive beginning established a pace and level of intensity that Wichita State, given its season-long struggles, was never equipped to match. It allowed Rice to play comfortably with its entire roster, experiment with rotations and cruise to a victory that was never in doubt, precisely as the statistical models had heavily predicted.

Rice finished with 17 points off 12 Wichita State turnovers and outscored the Shockers 26-24 in the paint. The Owls also recorded nine blocks as a team, led by four from Clifton.

The announced attendance was 1,088.

Rice will look to continue its strong season when it hosts South Florida on Tuesday. Wichita State returns home to face Texas-San Antonio on Feb. 21.
