Jackson State Women Pull Away From Mississippi Valley State in Second Half

AVALON, Miss. (Interstat) — The Jackson State Lady Tigers used a dominant third-quarter defensive performance to pull away from the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes and secure a 64-50 victory in a Southwestern Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at the LeFlore County Civic Center.

In a contest defined by offensive struggles, Jackson State held Mississippi Valley State to just eight points in the pivotal third period, turning a narrow 30-32 halftime deficit into a commanding 47-40 lead entering the final quarter. The Lady Tigers never relinquished that advantage, methodically extending their lead down the stretch to snap a two-game skid and improve to 7-16 overall. The Devilettes fell to 4-17.

The game’s most important sequence unfolded early in the third quarter. After a back-and-forth first half that featured 10 lead changes and saw Mississippi Valley State take a slim two-point lead into the break, Jackson State emerged from the locker room with renewed defensive intensity. The Lady Tigers clamped down, forcing the Devilettes into a series of rushed shots and turnovers. Mississippi Valley State managed only three field goals in the entire quarter, shooting a dismal 3-of-15 from the floor.

This defensive stand allowed Jackson State to seize control with a 17-8 frame. Key contributions came from across the roster during the run. Angel Wilkinson, a guard from Brookhaven, Mississippi, provided a critical spark with a layup and a free throw. Forward Mikayla Brown of Dallas, Texas, anchored the interior defense and secured key rebounds, while guard Rhema Pegues of Olive Branch, Mississippi, knocked down a crucial three-pointer to extend the lead.

Jackson State’s offense, while not efficient, proved sufficient. The Lady Tigers shot 40% from the field, making 22 of 55 attempts, and capitalized on their opportunities at the free-throw line, hitting 16 of 23. They also dominated the glass, outrebounding Mississippi Valley State 45-35 and grabbing 16 offensive rebounds that led to 13 second-chance points.

Mississippi Valley State was led by Sydnei Marshall of Memphis, Tennessee, who scored 14 points. However, the Devilettes’ offense sputtered against Jackson State’s pressure, committing 19 turnovers that led to 18 points for the Lady Tigers. As a team, Mississippi Valley State shot just 32.8% from the field and a meager 14.3% from three-point range.

For Jackson State, the scoring was balanced. Jada Patton, a forward from Granger, Indiana, led the way with 14 points off the bench. Wilkinson finished with 12 points, and Pegues added 10. Brown narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. Guard Jaileyah Cotton of Bardstown, Kentucky, facilitated the offense with a game-high five assists.

The victory was a needed rebound for Jackson State following a close loss at Arkansas-Pine Bluff earlier in the week. According to Interstat’s ELO system, the Lady Tigers entered as significant favorites with a 75.20 percent probability to win, and their second-half performance justified that projection.

Mississippi Valley State, which has now lost three consecutive games, struggled to find consistent offense outside of Marshall. Forward Desiree Smith of Fayetteville, North Carolina, contributed five points and seven rebounds, but the Devilettes’ 70.8 offensive rating underscored their difficulties in generating clean looks against a swarming Jackson State defense.

An announced crowd of 568 watched as Jackson State methodically closed the game in the fourth quarter, maintaining a double-digit lead for much of the final period. The Lady Tigers will look to build on this conference win when they host Bethune-Cookman on Thursday. Mississippi Valley State hits the road for its next contest, facing Alabama State on Thursday.
