Carlson Leads Colorado State Women in Rout of Wyoming
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (Interstat) — The Colorado State Rams showcased their offensive firepower and defensive discipline in a commanding 83-54 victory over the Wyoming Cowgirls in a Mountain West Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at a sold-out Moby Arena.
A crowd of 8,083 watched the Rams, now 18-6 overall, methodically dismantle Wyoming from the opening tip, building a double-digit lead in the first quarter and never relenting. The Cowgirls fell to 8-15 with the loss, unable to match Colorado State’s efficiency at either end of the floor.
The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the opening quarter, where Colorado State established a tone of dominance that would last all afternoon. After Wyoming’s Jane Rumpf opened the scoring with two free throws, the Rams responded with a decisive 12-0 run. The surge was fueled by precise three-point shooting and stifling defense. Brooke Carlson of Batavia, Illinois, ignited the run with a three-pointer, assisted by Kloe Froebe. Following a blocked shot by Wyoming’s Logann Alvar, Froebe converted two free throws, and Lexus Bargesser of Grass Lake, Michigan, added two more from the line. Carlson then found McKenna Murphy for a layup, and Froebe drilled another three-pointer to cap the run, giving Colorado State a 14-2 lead less than four minutes into the game.
Wyoming, to its credit, fought back with an 11-2 run of its own, highlighted by a three-pointer from Henna Sandvik of Helsinki, Finland, to close the gap to 16-14. However, the Rams closed the quarter on an 8-5 spurt, including a layup from Madelyn Bragg of Aberdeen, South Dakota, at the buzzer, to take a 24-19 lead into the second period. That closing sequence halted Wyoming’s momentum and ensured Colorado State would play from ahead for the remainder of the contest.
The Rams steadily expanded their advantage throughout the second quarter, outscoring Wyoming 23-15 to take a 47-34 lead into halftime. Carlson was the engine, scoring nine points in the period, including a three-point play. The Rams’ ball movement was superior, as evidenced by their 13 made three-pointers on 24 attempts for the game, a 54.2 percent clip. Wyoming, by contrast, managed just 9 of 29 from beyond the arc.
Any hope of a Wyoming comeback was extinguished in a defensively dominant third quarter. The Cowgirls were held to just seven points on 3-of-15 shooting from the field and committed four turnovers. Colorado State’s defense tightened, allowing just one Wyoming field goal over the final six minutes of the quarter. Offensively, the Rams continued to execute, with Carlson and Bragg combining for 11 points in the period to push the lead to 64-41.
The fourth quarter saw Colorado State maintain its comfortable margin, with reserves seeing significant action in the final minutes. Jadyn Fife of North Richland Hills, Texas, and Olivia Pawlicki connected on late three-pointers to seal the 29-point victory.
Carlson, the Rams’ top star, led all scorers with 23 points in 34 minutes, adding four assists. She was instrumental in the game-deciding first-quarter run. Froebe, from Lincoln, Illinois, provided 17 points and five assists, while Bargesser added 11 points, three assists and a block. Bragg and Hannah Ronsiek of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, chipped in 10 and nine points, respectively.
Wyoming was led by Rumpf, a Denver native, who scored 16 points, blocked two shots and grabbed two steals. Malene Pedersen of Aabyhoej, Denmark, added 11 points. The Cowgirls were hampered by poor shooting overall, finishing at 33.9 percent from the field, and managed only three assists against six turnovers.
Statistically, the game was a study in efficiency. Colorado State scored 83 points on 60 possessions, an offensive rating of 138.0, while Wyoming managed only 54 points on 61 possessions, an offensive rating of 88.8. The Rams also dominated inside, outscoring Wyoming 22-12 in the paint and committing just five turnovers.
The victory keeps Colorado State in strong contention near the top of the Mountain West standings. Wyoming, mired in a difficult season, will look to regroup on the road. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch in Laramie on Feb. 21.
Wyoming travels to face UNLV on Wednesday. Colorado State heads to San Diego State for its next contest, also on Wednesday.
