Texas Southern at Florida A&M
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Interstat) — Two Southwestern Athletic Conference teams looking to build on rare wins will meet Saturday when the Texas Southern Lady Tigers visit the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers.
The game tips off at 2 p.m. EST at the Alfred Lawson, Jr. Multipurpose Center.
Both squads enter off victories last Thursday. Texas Southern (9-13) fell 69-64 at Bethune-Cookman despite 21 points from guard Taliyah Logwood. Florida A&M (6-15) snapped a three-game skid with an 80-61 home win over Prairie View, powered by 18 points from Shaniyah McCarthy.
The matchup features two of the SWAC’s most dynamic scorers. Logwood, the Lady Tigers’ player to watch, has been explosive, including a 29-point performance against Alabama State on Jan. 22. She averages 15.4 points per game in her last five outings where she played 20+ minutes.
For the Lady Rattlers, McCarthy has been a model of consistency, scoring in double figures in eight consecutive games and logging heavy minutes. She poured in 23 points in a win at Mississippi Valley State on Jan. 15 and 22 points in a victory over Jackson State on Jan. 22.
While Texas Southern holds the better overall record, conference play has been a struggle for both. The Lady Tigers are 3-6 in their last nine SWAC contests. The Lady Rattlers have found wins scarce, but their recent victory showed offensive potential, with Miya Giles-Jones adding 19 points against Prairie View.
Defense may decide this contest. In wins, Texas Southern has held opponents to an average of 58.2 points; in losses, they allow 73.1. Florida A&M will aim to disrupt Logwood’s rhythm and convert defense into transition opportunities for McCarthy.
The game is a crucial swing opportunity in the SWAC standings before both teams embark on challenging late-season stretches.
