Texas-San Antonio at Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. (Interstat) — The Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners delivered a commanding defensive performance to stifle the Tulsa Golden Hurricane 66-47 in an American Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Donald Reynolds Center.

The Roadrunners, improving to 11-11 overall, held Tulsa to its lowest scoring output of the season, leveraging a dominant third quarter to pull away before a crowd of 1,364. The Golden Hurricane, which entered the contest with a 16-7 record and a 75.3% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, saw a three-game winning streak snapped in decisive fashion.

The game’s pivotal sequence came after halftime. Leading by just four points, 27-23, Texas-San Antonio erupted for a 22-point third quarter while its defense clamped down. The Roadrunners opened the period on a 12-2 run, spearheaded by forward Idara Udo of Plano, Texas, who scored six quick points. Tulsa managed only nine points in the quarter on 3-of-15 shooting, missing all five of its three-point attempts and committing four turnovers. By the time the quarter ended, the Roadrunners had built a 49-32 lead, a margin Tulsa never seriously challenged.

The foundation for the win was built on overwhelming interior play and disruptive defense. Texas-San Antonio outscored Tulsa 38-22 in the paint and outrebounded the Golden Hurricane 44-33, including a 10-4 advantage on the offensive glass. The Roadrunners’ length, led by 6-foot-2 forward Cheyenne Rowe of Ajax, Canada, and 6-3 center Mia Hammonds of Cibolo, Texas, resulted in three blocks and altered countless other shots. Tulsa finished the game shooting just 32.2% from the field and a frigid 18.5% from three-point range.

Rowe was the standout performer for UTSA, posting 17 points and nine rebounds in 29 minutes, anchoring the defense with two blocks. Udo provided a major offensive spark off the bench, scoring a game-high 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting, with 14 of those points coming in the second half. Guard Ereauna Hardaway of Jonesboro, Arkansas, orchestrated the offense with seven assists and six rebounds.

Tulsa, which had been averaging over 70 points per game, was led by Mady Cartwright of Greenwood, Arkansas, with 11 points. The Golden Hurricane’s offensive rating of 67.3 points per 100 possessions was a season low, as they struggled to find any consistent rhythm against UTSA’s active defensive schemes.

The Roadrunners set the defensive tone early, holding Tulsa to nine points in the second quarter to take a slim lead into the break. After the decisive third-quarter surge, UTSA maintained its composure in the fourth, answering every minimal Tulsa push to secure the 19-point victory.

Texas-San Antonio, which had lost two straight conference games entering Saturday, will look to build on this performance when it hosts Temple on Tuesday. Tulsa, which fell to 16-8, must regroup quickly for a road test at South Florida on Wednesday.
