Middle Tennessee at Florida International

WESTCHESTER, Fla. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and squandered opportunities, the Florida International women’s basketball team edged Middle Tennessee 60-58 in a tense Conference USA matchup Saturday at Ocean Bank Convocation Center.

The Golden Panthers, overcoming a poor shooting performance by forcing a cascade of turnovers, survived a frantic final sequence to secure the victory and improve to 14-8 overall. The Blue Raiders fell to 12-11 despite holding a lead for much of the first half and rallying late.

The most critical phase of the contest unfolded in the game’s final minute. Trailing 58-56 after Middle Tennessee’s Yu Han Lin converted a layup with 28 seconds remaining, Florida International’s Grecia Ferrer Leal was fouled on the ensuing inbounds play. The guard from Badalona, Spain, made the first free throw but missed the second, leaving the Golden Panthers ahead by a single point with 16 seconds left.

Middle Tennessee called a timeout to advance the ball and set up a final play. Out of the stoppage, the Blue Raiders’ leading scorer, Alayna Contreras, missed a three-pointer. Stanislava Kabernick grabbed the offensive rebound and put it back in to give Middle Tennessee a 59-58 lead with just six seconds on the clock.

The Blue Raiders’ celebration was short-lived. On the inbound pass, Florida International immediately found Rhema Collins in the frontcourt, and she was fouled by Kabernick while attempting a shot with four seconds remaining. Collins, a 6-foot-2 center from Nassau, Bahamas, calmly sank the first free throw to tie the game. After a Middle Tennessee timeout, she missed the second attempt, but the rebound was tapped out of traffic, and Parris Atkins secured it for Florida International and was fouled with 0.4 seconds left.

Atkins made both free throws to put the Golden Panthers up 60-59. Middle Tennessee’s desperation full-court heave was off target, sealing the narrow win for the home team before an announced crowd of 157.

The game was a struggle offensively for both sides. Florida International shot just 32.7% from the field and 21.1% from three-point range. Middle Tennessee was only slightly better at 38.2% from the floor. The difference came at the free-throw line, where the Golden Panthers made 22 of 28 attempts, and in points off turnovers. Florida International’s aggressive defense generated 24 Middle Tennessee turnovers, which they converted into 22 points. The Blue Raiders, by contrast, had only 12 points off 17 Florida International giveaways.

Ferrer Leal led all players with a well-rounded stat line of 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists, orchestrating the Florida International offense despite the team’s shooting woes. Collins was a force inside with 15 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Atkins added 15 points and five rebounds, providing crucial scoring bursts.

For Middle Tennessee, Contreras, a guard from Minneapolis, shouldered the offensive load with 17 points and six assists in 38 minutes. Savannah Davis of Mckenzie, Tennessee, contributed 12 points and seven rebounds, while Macie Phifer of New Albany, Mississippi, posted eight points, eight rebounds and two blocks.

The Blue Raiders started strong, using a 24-point second quarter to take a 34-24 lead into halftime. However, the third quarter proved disastrous as Florida International’s defensive intensity ramped up. The Golden Panthers outscored Middle Tennessee 21-11 in the period, fueled by a 12-2 run that erased the deficit and gave them a lead they would not fully relinquish down the stretch.

Middle Tennessee’s ball security issues were paramount; their 24 turnovers led to a stark possession disadvantage. They managed only six assists against those 24 giveaways, highlighting the disruptive nature of Florida International’s defense, which also recorded 12 steals.

The win moves Florida International above .500 in conference play, while Middle Tennessee will look to regroup after a second consecutive close loss, having fallen to Missouri State 60-54 on Thursday. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Middle Tennessee had entered the game with a 69% probability to win.

Florida International travels to face Louisiana Tech on Thursday. Middle Tennessee returns home to host Jacksonville State the same night.
