Army at Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. (Interstat) — The Army women’s basketball team used a dominant second-quarter surge to seize control and never looked back, defeating Lafayette 62-50 in a Patriot League contest Saturday at Kirby Sports Center.

The Black Knights, improving to 18-5 overall, trailed by eight points after the first quarter but outscored the Leopards 27-14 in the second period to take a lead they would not relinquish. The victory was built on defensive pressure and opportunistic offense, as Army forced 15 Lafayette turnovers, converting them into 14 points, while committing only eight turnovers of their own.

The most important stretch of the game came in that decisive second quarter. After Lafayette’s Haylie Adamski hit a 3-pointer to extend the Leopards’ lead to 26-21 with 4:52 remaining in the half, Army closed the quarter on a stunning 17-7 run. The Black Knights’ offense, which had sputtered early, found its rhythm from beyond the arc. Reese Ericson and Camryn Tade connected on critical 3-pointers during the flurry, which was fueled by Army’s active hands on defense. The Black Knights recorded four steals in the quarter, disrupting Lafayette’s offensive flow and creating transition chances.

Army’s Kya Smith, a 6-foot-1 sophomore from Lubbock, Texas, was the catalyst, orchestrating the offense and filling the stat sheet. She finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, narrowly missing a triple-double, while adding four steals. Her playmaking was pivotal during the key run, as she assisted on multiple baskets.

Ericson, a guard from Lake Oswego, Oregon, provided a game-high 18 points, including four 3-pointers. Tade, from Southlake, Texas, added 15 points. For Lafayette, which fell to 8-15, Maddison Krug of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, posted 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Talia Zurinskas of Allentown, Pennsylvania, dished out nine assists but was harassed into seven turnovers by Army’s defensive pressure.

The Leopards started strong, shooting efficiently in the first quarter to build a 19-11 lead. However, their offense stagnated against Army’s intensified defense for the remainder of the game. Lafayette managed just 10 points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth, shooting 19 for 46 from the field overall. Army, meanwhile, found its shooting touch, finishing 10 for 22 from 3-point range after a cold start.

The Black Knights also dominated the glass, securing 12 offensive rebounds to Lafayette’s five, leading to a 12-2 advantage in second-chance points. Army’s defensive effort was comprehensive, tallying 12 steals and four blocks, with Taylor Wilson of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, contributing three of those blocks.

Army’s offensive rating of 107.2 points per 100 possessions starkly outpaced Lafayette’s mark of 86.4, underscoring the Black Knights’ superior efficiency after the first quarter. The win keeps Army near the top of the Patriot League standings, while Lafayette continues to search for consistency in league play.

The announced attendance was 466. Army next travels to face Boston University on Wednesday. Lafayette will host Lehigh next Saturday.
