East Tennessee State at Furman
TRAVELERS REST, S.C. (Interstat) — In a grinding, defensive struggle defined by critical stops and a singular dominant performance, the East Tennessee State Lady Buccaneers exacted a measure of revenge with a 58-55 victory over the Furman Paladins in a Southern Conference women’s basketball clash Saturday at Timmons Arena.
The game, witnessed by 947 fans, was a stark contrast to the teams’ first meeting just a month prior, a 72-70 Furman win. This time, East Tennessee State’s defense, particularly in a stifling first quarter, set the tone for a wire-to-wire battle where neither team led by more than eight points.
The most important part of the game arrived in its final, frantic minute. With the score knotted at 55 and under 30 seconds to play, East Tennessee State’s Carmen Richardson, who had been instrumental all afternoon, delivered the decisive blow. The junior guard from Orlando, Florida, sank a clutch 3-pointer with just five seconds remaining on the clock, breaking the tie and silencing the home crowd. Furman’s ensuing desperation heave from Chantelle Stuart was off the mark, sealing the Lady Buccaneers’ hard-fought road win.
The contest was largely a duel between Richardson and Furman’s standout forward Clare Coyle. Richardson finished with 14 points, four assists, and a critical block in the final minutes, orchestrating the offense when it mattered most. But it was Coyle who authored a monstrous individual effort, nearly willing Furman to victory single-handedly. The junior from Jacksonville, Florida, posted a game-high 19 points and hauled in 11 rebounds for a double-double, while also swatting four shots and anchoring the Paladins’ interior defense for all 40 minutes.
East Tennessee State established control early, leveraging its defensive pressure to force Furman into a disastrous start. The Paladins managed only six points in the opening quarter, missing 10 of their first 11 field goal attempts and committing five turnovers. The Lady Buccaneers led 11-6 after one and extended their advantage to 21-12 in the second quarter following a 3-pointer from Jaidyn Harper.
Furman, however, responded with a 17-point second quarter, fueled by Coyle’s work inside and timely outside shooting from Lauren Bailey and Samaria Taylor. The Paladins closed the half on an 11-2 run, capped by a Clare Coyle assist on a Brooklyn King layup, to tie the game at 23 heading into the break.
The second half became a tense exchange of runs. East Tennessee State rebuilt a seven-point lead in the third quarter behind Harper and Anala Nelson, only to see Furman claw back again. Coyle scored eight points in the period, and Bailey’s second 3-pointer of the game gave Furman its first and only lead at 37-34 late in the third. The Lady Buccaneers answered with five straight free throws to reclaim a 39-37 edge entering the final frame.
The fourth quarter featured six ties and three lead changes, with neither team able to secure more than a one-possession advantage for the final seven minutes. Furman’s Raina McGowens, who finished with 10 points and six rebounds, tied the game at 55 on a jumper with 1:07 left. After an East Tennessee State turnover, Furman had a chance to take the lead, but McGowens missed two crucial free throws with 33 seconds remaining, setting the stage for Richardson’s game-winning heroics.
Beyond the stars, the game was a testament to defensive effort. Both teams shot under 40% from the field, with East Tennessee State at 39.6% and Furman at 42.2%. The Paladins won the battle in the paint, 28-18, and blocked seven shots to East Tennessee State’s three, largely thanks to Coyle. However, the Lady Buccaneers forced 14 Furman turnovers, converting them into 11 points, and outscored the Paladins from beyond the arc and at the free-throw line. East Tennessee State hit six 3-pointers to Furman’s four and went 14 of 17 from the charity stripe, while Furman was 13 of 18.
Supporting Richardson for East Tennessee State were Jaidyn Harper with 13 points and Anala Nelson with 12. Meghan Downing contributed seven points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. For Furman, Samaria Taylor provided 11 points off the bench, and Lauren Bailey added nine points, including two key 3-pointers.
With the victory, East Tennessee State improves to 12-11 overall and evens the season series with Furman. The Paladins fall to 14-10. The Lady Buccaneers will look to continue their momentum when they host Mercer on Tuesday. Furman aims to rebound on the road at Western Carolina next Thursday.
