Miami (Fla.) at Virginia
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Interstat) — The Virginia women’s basketball team looks to rebound from a road loss when it hosts Miami (Fla.) in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup Thursday night at John Paul Jones Arena.
The Cavaliers (15-7, 5-4 ACC) enter the contest after falling 76-64 at rival Virginia Tech this past Sunday. Virginia had won two straight prior, including a triple-overtime, 109-103 victory at Wake Forest on Jan. 29. The Cavaliers are 9-2 at home this season.
The Hurricanes (12-10, 3-6) are seeking to end a two-game skid, most recently a 65-60 home loss to Syracuse on Sunday. Miami has lost four of its last five games and is 2-5 in true road games.
Virginia holds a distinct advantage in the standings, but the teams’ first meeting this season was a thriller. Miami edged Virginia 75-67 in overtime in Coral Gables on Jan. 1, fueled by a 21-point, 11-rebound performance from Ra Shaya Kyle.
Kyle remains the focal point for Miami. The standout forward is coming off a 13-point, eight-rebound effort against Syracuse and has scored in double figures in six of her last seven games, including a 30-point, 10-rebound performance against Florida State on Jan. 11.
Virginia will counter with guard Gabby White, who has provided a recent scoring punch. White posted 15 points and seven rebounds against Virginia Tech and scored a season-high 22 points in the triple-overtime win at Wake Forest. Her play will be key for a Cavaliers offense that averages 72.6 points per game.
Miami averages 68.5 points but has been held under 70 in three of its last four contests. Containing Kyle in the paint and improving its perimeter defense will be priorities for Virginia, which allows 65.2 points per game.
The game tips off at 7 p.m. EST. Virginia visits Notre Dame next on Sunday, while Miami travels to face Florida State.
