Lafayette at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Interstat) — The Navy women’s basketball team will look to continue its dominance in Patriot League play and complete a season sweep when it hosts Lafayette on Wednesday night at Alumni Hall.

The Midshipmen (14-6 overall) enter the matchup riding a six-game winning streak, including a decisive 97-58 victory at Lafayette just over three weeks ago on Jan. 10. Navy’s offense has been potent during this stretch, averaging 74.2 points per game.

Lafayette (8-13) seeks to halt its recent skid after falling 70-60 to American in its last outing. The Leopards have lost four of their last five games and will be challenged by a Navy defense that has held opponents to an average of 55.8 points during its current win streak.

A key matchup will feature two of the conference’s top performers. Lafayette is led by guard Teresa Kiewiet, who is averaging 17.1 points over her last seven games. She scored 17 points in the first meeting against Navy this season. For the Midshipmen, guard Julianna Almeida has been a consistent force, coming off a 19-point, 4-rebound performance in a win over Loyola Maryland. Almeida contributed 8 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists in the January rout of the Leopards.

Navy’s balanced attack, which saw three players score in double figures in the previous meeting, will test a Lafayette defense that has allowed 70 or more points in three of its last five losses. The Midshipmen also hold a significant rebounding edge, averaging nearly seven more boards per game than the Leopards this season.

Historically, Navy has controlled the series, winning the last 15 meetings dating back to 2015. The Midshipmen’s last loss to Lafayette was in January 2014.

Following this contest, Navy will travel to face American on Saturday. Lafayette will host Army on the same day.
