Campbell Holds Off William & Mary in Colonial Athletic Association Matchup

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Interstat) — A suffocating defensive effort in the second quarter proved decisive as the Campbell women’s basketball team secured a 63-54 road victory over William & Mary in a Colonial Athletic Association contest Friday night at Kaplan Arena.

The Fightin’ Camels (14-8, 7-2 CAA) turned a back-and-forth first quarter into a comfortable lead by holding the Tribe to a mere five points in the second period. Campbell’s 21-18 lead after one quarter ballooned to 33-23 by halftime, a margin William & Mary could not overcome despite a persistent second-half push.

Campbell’s offense was paced by Olivia Tucker, who scored 16 points, and a balanced supporting cast. Gianni Boone and Jasmine Felton each added 12 points, while Jasmine Nivar contributed nine. The defensive anchor was N’na Konate, who swatted three shots and altered several others in just 18 minutes of action.

William & Mary (10-9, 4-4) was led by the dynamic play of Alexa Mikeska, who nearly recorded a double-double with 11 points and eight assists. Natalie Fox provided an interior presence with a team-high 14 points, and Cassidy Geddes chipped in 15. However, the Tribe’s offense repeatedly stalled against Campbell’s pressure, committing 22 turnovers that led to 18 points for the visitors.

The game’s pivotal sequence began late in the first quarter and extended through the entire second. After a high-scoring opening period that featured six lead changes, Campbell tightened its defense. The Tribe went scoreless for over five minutes, missing eight consecutive field goal attempts and committing four turnovers during a stretch that spanned the quarter break.

Campbell capitalized with a 10-0 run. A driving layup by Ciara Alexander and free throws from Jasmine Nivar were part of the surge that gave the Fightin’ Camels a 31-20 advantage with 4:58 remaining in the half. William & Mary’s only points of the quarter came on a Kyah Smith free throw and two from Geddes, as they shot a dismal 1-for-12 from the floor in the period.

The Tribe fought back in the third quarter, trimming the deficit to six points on three separate occasions, the last at 40-34 following a pair of free throws from Fox. Each time, Campbell had an answer. A critical 3-pointer from Felton, assisted by Tucker, and a layup from Boone in the final minute of the third quarter helped Campbell maintain a 49-40 lead entering the final frame.

William & Mary made one last charge early in the fourth, closing to within 49-46 after a Fox layup with 6:56 to play. Campbell called timeout and responded with its own 7-0 spurt, keyed by a Tucker 3-pointer and a Felton layup, to push the lead back to 10 with 2:53 remaining and effectively seal the game.

The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Campbell, which edged William & Mary 45-43 in Buies Creek on Jan. 11. It also marked the Fightin’ Camels’ third straight win, bolstering their position in the CAA standings.

William & Mary, which entered the game with a projected 53% probability of winning according to Interstat’s ELO system, saw its two-game winning streak snapped. The Tribe struggled from beyond the arc, making only five 3-pointers, and were outscored 18-9 in points off turnovers.

An announced crowd of 1,265 at Kaplan Arena watched as Campbell improved to 5-4 in true road games this season. William & Mary fell to 7-3 at home.

Campbell continues its road swing with a visit to College of Charleston on Sunday. William & Mary will look to rebound at home against UNC Wilmington, also on Sunday.
