Alabama State Women Hold Off Florida A&M in SWAC Contest

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Interstat) — In a game defined more by relentless defensive pressure and squandered opportunities than fluid offense, the Alabama State Lady Hornets used a dominant performance in the paint and a decisive fourth-quarter run to pull away from the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers 75-64 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference women’s basketball matchup Thursday night at Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

The contest, played before an announced crowd of 842, was a battle of attrition featuring a staggering 53 combined turnovers. Alabama State improved to 8-11 overall, while Florida A&M fell to 5-14.

The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the final period. After Florida A&M’s Tahnyjia Purifoy converted two free throws to cut the Alabama State lead to 63-62 with just over seven minutes remaining, the Lady Hornets seized control with a game-defining 10-0 run. The surge was fueled by the interior presence of Clearia Peterson and timely perimeter shooting. Peterson scored inside, and after a Florida A&M turnover, Shamya Reid drained a crucial three-pointer from the wing, assisted by Amari Franklin, pushing the lead to 68-62.

Florida A&M’s offense, which had struggled with efficiency all night, completely stalled during this stretch, committing three turnovers and missing two shots over nearly three minutes. Peterson, a 5-foot-9 junior from Detroit, capped the run with a layup off an assist from Charlese McClendon, extending the Alabama State advantage to 73-62 with 3:06 to play. The Lady Rattlers could not mount a serious threat thereafter, never drawing closer than nine points.

Peterson was the cornerstone of Alabama State’s victory, finishing with 19 points, three blocks, and a relentless effort on the glass that contributed to the Lady Hornets’ commanding 19-12 advantage in offensive rebounds. Her defensive presence altered numerous shots in the lane. She was complemented by a balanced scoring effort that saw four other Lady Hornets reach double figures: Shamya Reid had 12 points and four assists, Ny’Keria Flowers scored 11, Caylee Simpson added 10, and Amari Franklin contributed 11 off the bench.

For Florida A&M, the burden of offense fell heavily on guard Tahnyjia Purifoy. The 5-foot sophomore from Pensacola, Florida, scored a game-high 18 points but needed 35 minutes of grueling work against constant defensive attention to do so. She was instrumental in keeping the Lady Rattlers within striking distance through three quarters. Breazia Robinson, a 6-foot-3 freshman from Cleveland, Ohio, provided a formidable defensive presence with seven blocked shots and added 11 points. Shaniyah McCarthy chipped in 11 points and four assists.

The game’s tempo was set from the opening tip, which Peterson won. Alabama State established an early edge, closing the first quarter on a 6-2 spurt to lead 20-13. The Lady Hornets maintained that margin through a sloppy second quarter, taking a 35-26 lead into halftime. Florida A&M’s offensive struggles were stark, shooting just 20 of 59 from the field for the game and a dismal 1 of 8 from three-point range. Their saving grace was a 23-of-29 performance from the free-throw line.

Alabama State was only marginally better from the field at 25 of 61, but they capitalized on second chances, outscoring Florida A&M 40-30 in the paint and converting 20 Lady Rattler turnovers into 16 points. Florida A&M’s defensive pressure was also effective, generating 29 Alabama State turnovers, which they translated into 29 points, but they could not overcome their own offensive inefficiency, posting an offensive rating of just 75.5 points per 100 possessions compared to Alabama State’s 89.5.

The victory gives Alabama State momentum as they prepare to host Bethune-Cookman on Saturday. Florida A&M, meanwhile, will look to regroup quickly before traveling to face Alabama A&M, also on Saturday. The teams are scheduled for a rematch in Tallahassee on February 20.
