Tritons Edge Gauchos in Defensive Big West Showdown

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by a decisive third-quarter stand, the UC San Diego women’s basketball team edged UC Santa Barbara 52-49 in a pivotal Big West Conference matchup Thursday night at the Thunderdome.

The Tritons, who led by a single point at halftime, held the Gauchos to just six points in the third quarter, transforming a 28-27 halftime deficit into a 39-34 lead entering the final period. That stifling defensive frame, during which UC Santa Barbara missed 10 of its 11 field goal attempts and committed four turnovers, proved to be the difference in a game where offensive efficiency was scarce.

UC San Diego improved to 14-6 overall and strengthened its position in the conference race, while handing UC Santa Barbara just its fourth loss of the season against 15 wins.

The game was a grind from the outset, with both teams struggling to find offensive rhythm. The Tritons shot 40% from the field but made only 4 of 17 from three-point range. The Gauchos were colder, finishing at 32.1% overall and 8 of 26 from beyond the arc. The teams combined for just 16 assists against 16 turnovers.

UC Santa Barbara’s Chauncey Andersen provided the primary offensive spark for the home side, scoring a game-high 17 points, including a critical three-pointer and a three-point play in the fourth quarter that fueled a late rally. Her back-to-back plays cut a seven-point UC San Diego lead down to 47-46 with just over six minutes remaining.

The Tritons answered with balanced scoring and key plays from their core. Dymonique Maxie led the team with 11 points and four assists, while Makayla Rose and Sabrina Ma each added 11 points. Ma, a sophomore from San Francisco, also contributed two assists and two blocks in a full 40-minute performance. Erin Condron, the 6-foot-4 junior from Australia, anchored the interior with nine points, two assists, two blocks and a game-high 11 defensive rebounds.

UC Santa Barbara’s Olivia Bradley finished with 15 points, but was hampered by the Tritons’ interior defense, particularly in the second half. The Gauchos managed only 18 points in the paint compared to 28 for UC San Diego.

After Andersen’s personal run brought the Gauchos within one, the teams traded empty possessions until Condron hit a layup with 4:17 left to push the Triton lead back to three. The Gauchos would not score again after a Madison Naro layup made it 49-47 with 4:34 remaining.

Over the final four minutes, both defenses locked down. UC Santa Barbara missed its final five field goal attempts and committed two turnovers. UC San Diego’s offense also stalled, but a crucial jump shot by Rosa Smith off a Gaucho turnover with 2:28 left provided the final points of the game, extending the lead to 52-47.

The Gauchos had two chances in the final 30 seconds to tie the game with a three-pointer. After a timeout with 24 seconds left, they managed two looks from beyond the arc, but an Olivia Bradley three-point attempt was off the mark and the final desperation heave as time expired was not close, sealing the Triton victory.

The win marks a significant road result for UC San Diego, which was projected by statistical metrics to have only a 35.9% chance of victory. The Tritons have now won two straight conference games. UC Santa Barbara sees a three-game winning streak snapped as it prepares for a quick turnaround on the road.

Attendance at the Thunderdome was 657.
