Long Island Pulls Away From Le Moyne in Northeast Conference Matchup

DE WITT, N.Y. (Interstat) — Kadidia Toure scored 19 points and Janessa Williams added 23 as the Long Island Sharks pulled away in the second quarter and cruised to an 84-65 victory over the Le Moyne Dolphins in a Northeast Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at Ted Grant Court.

The Sharks, who swept the season series after a win earlier this month, improved to 12-8 overall. The Dolphins fell to 5-17.

After a tightly contested first quarter that ended with Le Moyne leading 14-11, Long Island seized control with a dominant 29-point second period. The Sharks opened the quarter on a 9-0 run, capped by a Williams 3-pointer assisted by Solangelei Akridge, to take a lead they would not relinquish. Long Island’s offense was efficient and balanced during the surge, with Williams scoring 11 points in the quarter. The Sharks shot 64% from the field in the period and forced six Le Moyne turnovers, converting them into 10 points to build a 40-32 halftime advantage.

The most important stretch of the game came late in the second quarter, when Long Island extended its lead from four points to 13 in the final three minutes. After a Sierra Linnin 3-pointer brought Le Moyne within 31-28, the Sharks closed the half on a 9-1 run. Hannah Humphrey and Williams hit jumpers, Leila Nunez sank a 3-pointer, and Kionna Gaines scored on an offensive rebound just before the buzzer to give Long Island significant momentum heading into the break.

Le Moyne, led by Linnin’s game-high 24 points, could not mount a sustained comeback in the second half. The Dolphins cut the deficit to eight points on several occasions in the third quarter, but each time the Sharks responded. A key sequence occurred when Toure blocked an Ashley Buragas shot, leading to a fast break where Akridge found Kadidia Toure for a jumper to push the lead back to 12. Long Island’s defense, which recorded 10 steals and seven blocks, consistently disrupted Le Moyne’s rhythm.

The Sharks put the game away early in the fourth quarter. Leading 55-48, they used a 12-2 run over a three-minute span to blow the game open. Toure was instrumental during the decisive stretch, assisting on a Williams 3-pointer, hitting two free throws, and scoring on a layup. Her hook shot with 26 seconds left provided the final margin.

Toure, a 6-foot-3 sophomore from Silver Spring, Maryland, filled the stat sheet with 19 points, five assists and four blocks in 31 minutes. Williams, a junior guard from Lake Worth, Florida, connected on five 3-pointers for her 23 points. Akridge directed the offense with eight assists to go with eight points.

For Le Moyne, Linnin, a sophomore from Valley Cottage, New York, was the primary offensive threat, hitting four 3-pointers. Sydney Postell added 11 points and Peyton Dincher scored 14 off the bench. Buragas contributed nine points and six assists.

Long Island shot 49.2% from the field and connected on 13 3-pointers. Le Moyne shot 38.7% and was hampered by 21 turnovers, which the Sharks converted into 24 points.

The game was played before an announced crowd of 254.

Long Island next hosts Central Connecticut on Saturday. Le Moyne travels to face Stonehill, also on Saturday.
