Duquesne at Richmond
RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — A surging Richmond team will look to continue its dominant run in Atlantic 10 play when it hosts struggling Duquesne on Wednesday night at the Robins Center.
The Spiders (16-4) have won five straight conference games, most recently a 77-47 demolition of crosstown rival VCU on Jan. 18. They are powered by star forward Maggie Doogan, who is coming off a 48-point performance in a triple-overtime win over Davidson on Jan. 10. Doogan averages 22.3 points over her last six games and provides a versatile scoring and defensive threat.
Richmond’s balanced attack also features Rachel Ullstrom, who scored 20 points against VCU, and facilitator Ally Sweeney, who dished out six assists in that win. The Spiders have won those five A-10 contests by an average margin of 19.2 points.
They face a Duquesne squad mired in a prolonged slump. The Dukes (7-13) have lost nine consecutive games since a win over Pittsburgh on Dec. 21. Their last outing was a 72-53 home loss to Saint Joseph’s on Saturday.
Duquesne will lean on guard Mackenzie Blackford, who has been a consistent contributor during the skid. She logged 37 minutes and scored 11 points in a loss at Rhode Island on Jan. 18 and posted nine points in 23 minutes against Saint Joseph’s. Finding consistent offense has been a struggle; the Dukes have been held under 55 points in seven of their nine losses during this streak.
The matchup presents a stark contrast in trajectories. Richmond, firmly in the conference title chase, boasts one of the league’s most potent offenses. Duquesne, seeking to stop its freefall, ranks near the bottom of the A-10 in scoring. The Spiders won both meetings last season by double digits.
Wednesday’s game tips off at 7 p.m. EST. Richmond travels to VCU on Feb. 1, while Duquesne hosts La Salle on Jan. 31.
