Southern Women Roll Past Mississippi Valley State in SWAC Matchup

BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) — The Southern Lady Jaguars used a dominant first quarter and a decisive third-quarter surge to dispatch the visiting Mississippi Valley State Devilettes 69-46 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at the Clark Activity Center.

A crowd of 2,896 watched Southern improve to 9-8 overall and solidify its position in the SWAC standings, while Mississippi Valley State fell to 4-14.

The game’s trajectory was set from the opening tip. Southern’s defense was stifling, forcing a flurry of early Mississippi Valley State turnovers and holding the Devilettes to just two made field goals in the first quarter. The Lady Jaguars raced out to a 23-6 lead after the first period, capitalizing on a 15-0 run that spanned nearly five minutes. Demya Porter ignited the run with a steal and a layup, and the offense flowed from there, with contributions from Olivia Delancy, Jestiny Dixon and a putback by Xyllize Harrison. The Devilettes struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Southern’s active, switching defense.

Mississippi Valley State showed resilience in the second quarter, outscoring Southern 13-7 as the Lady Jaguars’ offense cooled. The Devilettes tightened their own defense, holding Southern to just two field goals in the period. A pull-up jumper by Sydnei Marshall and a late layup from Desiree Smith helped the visitors cut the deficit to 30-19 at halftime, offering a glimmer of hope.

Any notion of a comeback was emphatically extinguished in the third quarter. Southern rediscovered its offensive potency, exploding for 25 points while holding Mississippi Valley State to just eight. The Lady Jaguars shot efficiently from the field and from distance during the period. Jaylia Reed, who finished with a team-high 13 points, connected on a three-pointer and a smooth jumper. Zaria Hurston also hit from beyond the arc, and Jocelyn Tate contributed with a pull-up jumper and a three-point play. The defensive pressure returned as well, with Porter and Tate recording steals that led to easy transition baskets. By the time the quarter ended, Southern had stretched its lead to 55-27, putting the game firmly out of reach.

The fourth quarter saw both teams empty their benches. Mississippi Valley State’s Sydney Thompson provided a bright spot for the visitors, scoring nine of her team-high nine points in the final period, including a pair of three-pointers. Southern’s reserves maintained the comfortable margin, with Demonnie Lagway contributing six points and four assists overall, and Kiana Wilson adding key free throws late to secure the 69-46 final score.

Beyond Reed’s 13 points, Southern’s offense was balanced. D’Shantae Edwards added seven points and was a disruptive force defensively, while Tate finished with nine points. Porter anchored the interior with four points, a block, and several steals. For Mississippi Valley State, Thompson’s nine points led the way, but the team was hampered by 30 turnovers, which Southern converted into 33 points.

The most important part of the game was Southern’s immediate and overwhelming defensive response to Mississippi Valley State’s second-quarter push. After allowing the Devilettes to gain a measure of confidence before halftime, the Lady Jaguars opened the third quarter with a 15-4 run over the first five minutes, re-establishing their defensive intensity. This sequence, featuring forced turnovers and efficient scoring, decisively crushed any momentum the visitors had built and transformed a manageable 11-point lead into an insurmountable 28-point chasm by the quarter’s end. That stretch underscored the game’s fundamental theme: when Southern applied consistent defensive pressure, Mississippi Valley State had no answer.

Southern will look to build on this conference win when it hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday. Mississippi Valley State continues its road trip with a visit to Grambling on Saturday.
