Charlotte Women Roll Past Florida Atlantic in AAC Matchup
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — The Charlotte 49ers used a dominant performance on the glass and capitalized on a rash of Florida Atlantic turnovers to secure a decisive 77-56 victory in an American Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Tuesday night at Halton Arena.
From the opening tip, Charlotte established control, building a 20-12 lead after the first quarter and never looking back. The 49ers steadily expanded their advantage each period, outscoring the Owls in all four quarters before an announced crowd of 604.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded early in the third quarter, effectively extinguishing any hope of a Florida Atlantic rally. Leading 42-27 at halftime, Charlotte opened the second half with a relentless 12-2 run. The surge was fueled by defensive pressure and efficient offense. Tanajah Hayes converted a pair of free throws, and after a Florida Atlantic turnover, Princess Anderson drew a foul and made both shots from the line. Hayes then found Caitlin Staley for a layup, and Staley completed a three-point play after being fouled. The run, which also included a driving layup from Caroline Thiel, pushed Charlotte’s lead to 54-29 with 5:28 remaining in the third quarter, putting the game firmly out of reach.
Charlotte’s victory was built on overwhelming interior play and second-chance opportunities. The 49ers hauled in 17 offensive rebounds, leading to a 19-6 advantage in second-chance points and a 42-30 edge in total rebounds. This dominance compensated for a subpar night at the free-throw line, where Charlotte shot just 11 of 20.
Defensively, Charlotte harassed Florida Atlantic into 20 turnovers, converting them into 23 points. The 49ers also blocked three shots, with Staley recording two of them. Florida Atlantic struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm, posting an offensive rating of just 77.0 points per 100 possessions and shooting 39.6% from the field.
Charlotte guard Tanajah Hayes, a hometown product from Charlotte, orchestrated the offense with a team-high 14 points and six assists. She was one of five 49ers to score in double figures, showcasing a balanced attack. Princess Anderson added 12 points, while Zoe Best and Caitlin Staley each contributed 10 points. Staley, the 6-foot-4 center from Augusta, Georgia, also grabbed nine rebounds and blocked two shots. Asianae Nicholson provided significant energy off the bench with nine points and a game-high four offensive rebounds.
For Florida Atlantic, guard Michiyah Simmons was the lone consistent offensive threat, finishing with a game-high 16 points in 26 minutes. Forward Grace Carstensen added 13 points, but the Owls received little production elsewhere. The team managed only seven assists against their 20 turnovers, highlighting their disjointed offensive execution.
With the win, Charlotte improves to 9-10 overall and evens its conference record. The 49ers snapped a two-game losing streak. Florida Atlantic falls to 8-11 and has now lost two of its last three games following a promising conference win over UAB earlier this month. The Owls have been plagued by inconsistency, as evidenced by their recent results: a 46-point loss to Texas-San Antonio followed by a 21-point win over Wichita State.
The game played out largely as predicted by advanced metrics, as Interstat’s ELO system had given Charlotte a 78.4% probability of winning. The 49ers’ physicality and rebounding prowess proved to be the decisive factors, overwhelming a Florida Atlantic team that could not protect the ball or limit Charlotte’s extra possessions.
Charlotte will look to build on this performance as it hits the road to face Temple on Saturday. Florida Atlantic returns home to host South Florida, also on Saturday, seeking to rectify the issues that were so thoroughly exposed in Charlotte. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Boca Raton on Feb. 24.
